Soul Trapping Comparison...

Post » Mon Nov 28, 2011 1:45 pm

I don't know about anyone else, but something that bothered me about Oblivion (just one of the things) was the fact that (for me) Soul Trapping was utterly useless...

Transcendent Sigil Stones... That's ALL I used to enchant my things. Soul Trapping, the spells, soul trap weapons, collecting soul gems, etc, ALL useless. :(

Now, in MW, they FORCED you to soul trap stuff in order to enchant things (or you could buy them). Soul Trapping in MW was TOUGH sometimes. A Grand Soul Gem with a Golden Saint in it was worth 2,000,000 Gold :o

In Skyrim there's obviously not gonna be Sigil Stones for enchanting, so I HOPE that the FUN and DIFFICULTY (which makes it very fun and worthwhile) of soul trapping will return in Skyrim. ^_^

Agree? Disagree? :)

(EDIT: AWESOME, I'm a 'Curate' now! :D I has my first star! ^_^)

Soul Trapping in Oblivion was not only useful for enchanting an item, but for recharging it. It's a pain to have to go to someone to recharge your weapon every time it runs out, so having a filled soul gem handy was always useful.

Soul Trapping was annoying in both games. I hated it with a passion.

In Morrowind, enchanting was stupidly expensive :( I couldn't afford to make a damn thing for my Enchanter character. So I stuck to default items and relied on my recharge-over-time.

In Oblivion, I avoided magic items because they were stupidly expensive to recharge, and I didn't get enough bang for my buck.

I enjoyed playing an Enchanter in Morrowind. Being able to create pitifuly weak enchantments (well under 0.5 points) on your own at level 1 was entirely possible, and you just kept getting better and better at it. Aside from the cost of the empty gems (10 Septims for a Petty), it was free if you did it yourself. Better still, the items very gradually regenerated magicka on their own from the incorporated souls, so using soulgems to refill items was truly "optional", or needed only if you made heavy use of the item. In effect, the skill could totally replace casting from your own magicka (which sadly didn't regenerate at all while awake).

My only attempt at playing an Enchanter in Oblivion was a total waste of time and effort. Enchanted items didn't recharge themselves, but your own magicka did, so casting utility spells through soulgems was pointless. Recharging became a chore. The only useful aspects were weapon effects and CE boosts; the more prevalent "Cast on Use" utiliy enchantments (15 seconds Waterwalk; 5 points of Restore Health; Cure Disease, etc.) in Morrowind were removed entirely. To top it off, you could only start to make your own enchantments after a long set of MG quests, and you still had to pay to do your own! To add insult to injury, even an illiterate barbarian with no training could enchant items using a Sigil Stone, and do so with the same effectiveness as a highly skilled professional enchanter.

Enchanting was an enjoyable aspect of Morrowind, limited only by your imagination and your current skill level. It was a tedious grind in Oblivion, only useful for recharging weapons in the field, and just one more example of what was lost between the two games. I REALLY hope that Enchanting is brought back in some "useful" form in Skyrim, rather than the sorry remnant of it that was left in Oblivion.

I did like the possibility of trapping NPC souls. Some insolent bandit would have the audacity to attack ME, so I could take his soul and make him serve me potentially forever (or at least until Goldbrand needs a recharge).

No you're wrong, because if a captured Golden Saint is worth that much it must be Azura's Star (not sure how much) and not a Grand Soul Gem (80,000). :)
