How Much Jewelry is "Too Much?"

Post » Mon Nov 28, 2011 12:25 pm

Been having fun with some Altmer magey characters. Last one made it up to Level 9 before I got sloppy and she got killed. I woulda kept playing (in breach of my conviction to play Dead is Dead) but I always seem to kinda lose interest after that first death and wind up dying again, and again . . . and by then I'm like . . . 'immersion broken'

If something out of my control screws me up like my papillon jumps on my lap right as I'm fighting an Arctic Titan then I will in good conscience reload, but when I'm just stoopid and shouldn't have died, it become difficult to keep playing.

So I've restarted a new one (little sister to the last one): Bruma home with TuStartingOptions, get FrostCrag fully set up, she's actually a goody-two-shoes, unlike her predecessors . . .

Since I'm using Unlimited Amulets, Rings and Robes Over I can really stack up the enchanted gear. Last one had something like 40% shield and +70Magicka, plus a number of other buffs from rings and amulets I had found. Probably about 3 amulets and 13 rings.

It seems quite obvious why Bethesda made the one amulet and the one ring per hand rule: simple is easier to game balance, and the vanilla game is drop-dead easy at low levels: too many enchants would be game breaking.

However, with OOO + MMM I do not seem to be having tht problem :vaultboy: and even once I feel like "Heh! I'm becoming invincible" then some super baddy comes bopping over the horizon or around a corner and either kills me or forces me to retreat with barely any health left. So I am in good conscience making extensive use of the opportunities afforded by these mods to stack as many enchantments on top of my cute nice little Altmer girls body as possible.

However, for someone with some warped fantastical notion of "immersion" like me, this then raises the question: how much is too much?

We humanoids have twenty digits on our bodies (at least most of the time) and as far as I know, one CAN wear, many, MANY necklaces simultaneously, not to mention that an "amulet" could maybe even be pinned onto your hat/shirt/robe/loincloth?

I think we can rule out the argument that there would be some limit on the number of rings/amulets you can wear because they would "cancel each other out" for the simple reason that: you can have multiple spells effect you at once, indeed, you can have the whole top of the screen filled in with those little effect symbols. I realize this is probably how the devs rationalized the limitation if they were ever pressed on it, but in reality I don't believe it and think it was really just a game-balance issue. Fine, no problem. I can unbalance it with my mods ;) However, this does raise the question of "how many would be too much?" I DON"T like the idea of having a character running around with say 17 amulets and 43 rings, that is definitely beyond what I'd consider gamey.

But where is that boundary?

At some point, the clutter would start to become cumbersome, awkward, perhaps gauche?

If you had a ring on every finger, and every toe, would it impede your ability to use your hands for fine-motor movement tasks, or impede your ability to run or jump? Does anyone have any experience with this?

What about the necklaces? I see these Gangsta rappahs wearing what looks like about 20lbs of gold around their necks and they seem to be doing fine? Would my red-headed Altmer girl look okay decked out like a rappah?

I look forward to, and appreciate your expert opinions on this matter of fashion, and function.

Buffy has a mod that lets her wear more than two rings. It does not affect amulets. She has it set at 8 maximum figuring that is how many fingers she has and she doesn't care for thumb rings.

The reason we have the mod is that she changes outfits so often that trying to have anything except rings enchanted becomes silly/unmanageable. She dresses only for fashion. No enchanted apparel except rings for her.

Now, she is a glass cannon and all about not getting hit. Therefore she cares not a whit about armor rating or defense. With her intentionally tiny pool of hit points, if she starts getting hit, she will soon die. Also, we are deeply into roleplay. The only defensive advantage my Bosmer has is that her father was a Breton and she inherited his 50% magic resistance. She has no interest in boosting that or any other type of defense except the occasional use of a shield spell or potion.

With all that said, here is her collection of enchanted apparel:

-Two rings, each with 180 feet of detect life. Overkill inside dungeons, but very handy when riding her mare. She hates surprises and lives by seeing her foe first. When not in town, she normally has those on.
-Utility rings: night eye, water walk, water breathe. She slips those on and off as the situation requires. Inside dungeons, she usually simply relies on detect life to see foes and natural lighting to avoid traps.
-A ring of resist frost. She puts this on for RP when she is somewhere cold like Bruma.
-A ring of resist fire. She puts this on for RP when she is somewhere hot like, oh with lava and Daedra.

So. . . In town she normally wears zero rings. When adventuring, she normally wears two rings, but it is nice to briefly slip on a third or sometimes even a fourth ring when she needs it.

@Buffy: You've got at least 12 more digits girl!

Two? rings of 180ft life detect? Is that cumulative? She seriously can see everything coming from 360 feet away? Thats like, precognition . . .

. . . so no experience with that running with 10 toe rings on, eh? Never wore one myself . . .

I would justify rings and amulets in this manner:
1)Only your ring finger can hold the super-powerful rings, so you can only wear two of those (one per hand)
2)However, your ring finger is meant for rings, so you could substitute two lesser rings for that mega ring on one or both hands
3)Your tiny little pinkies can each only hold one pretty weak ring
4)Your middle and pointer fingers can each hold a ring, as long as it is not something super powerful like the sorcerer's ring or mundane ring
5)No rings for the thumb
6)I could see 3 or 4 necklaces/amulets being worn, but once again not all really powerful ones.

Or you could just limit it by weight, like your hands combined cannot hold more than 3 lbs of rings and your neck should not be burdened by more than 1 or 1.5 lbs of jewelry.

It just works out that way. Usually she's in town wearing 0 and adventures with just 2 rings. Its nice to know she can just pop on a water breathing ring for example if she wants to without shuffling stuff around.

Yes, detect life is cumulative. As I said, the 360 feet is way overkill inside a dungeon but very handy when riding Superian. She can see foes way in advance enough to dismount, sneak forward. take 'em out, then cast a command creature spell on her mare to bring the mare to her side. Buffy may carry a big girl bow and strike like a dragon, but she's fragile like a butterfly. Surprises are very dangerous to her and her mare. That's why the detect life is such a big deal to her. :)

Honestly, if she had a load of hit points and high armor rating and high resistances well, she wouldn't be Buffy anymore. So just a few rings are fine. Lol.

Usually I use a ring with detect life from one top level sigil stone, might add the grey cowl if I need more.
Very long range detect life let you shoot at enemies who are not in line of sight, like on the other side of a hill or simply that you are on a slope leading up to their position.
If you are in sneak mode they have no chance of seeing you :)
Also nice to clear a sigil tower core from behind, here poison is important as you want to kill the enemies not have them hunting for you with friends.

Depends on your thinking. For rings, I'd go with either 2 (one per hand, assume the magical aura would interfere with closer rings), 6 (Most you can get without having any touching), 10 (One on each finger, of course) or oh-god-how-am-I-holding-this-sword (Just keep stacking them on top of each other! You have 10 fingers, use them!)

6 seems to be the best balance between sanity and balance, IMO.

As for amulets, I'd say it's either one, one for each layer of clothing (to keep them apart), or neck-breaking.

Seems very reasonable, but what about the toes?

I'm not a big jewelry person myself; I actually have misplaced my wedding ring :cryvaultboy: cause I take (took) it on/off so often. Its probably in the house somewhere, but my wife doesn't seem too worried so I'm not either. I actually almost had a wedding ring kill me once in a cave (ex-wife naturally). I was chimneying and it hung on a little spur of rock . . .

If it was me, two would be my absolute max, and I tend to think that even that is somewhat uncomfortable.

But didn't Liberace wear like at least one if not two on every finger or something? AND was one of hte greatest piano players of the 20th century?

If you're going by the thinking that magic rings don't interfere with each other, then I can see 15 or 20 being fine (Limited to one per finger on your sword hand, anyway), but even with MMM/OOO I can't see 20 magic rings not being overpowered.

Hmmm. Well it looks like Liberace only sported about six or so

I'm gonna go with EIGHT as a reasonable limit on rings, plus two amulets and two necklaces.

Although Buffy uses very few enchanted items, she surely does enjoy her bling:

Looks really good, I′ll bet Lothran would appreciate that outfit too
On Buffy that is, not on him

And if Buffy wasn′t Buffy because of high resistences and hit points, that would truly be a very sad state of affairs :(

Has Buffy been contacted by Playboy magazine yet? She would be great for a centerfold.

Caution: Long rambling about Buffy the Bowgirl alert. Since this is Anthropoid's thread and he asked, I will ask everyone's tolerance. If you are not a fan of Buffy, please feel free to skip over this post. :)

The Black Horse Courier does an annual edition, 'The Girls of Cyrodiil', but they always try to feature women of more, um. . . Nordic proportions than Buffy. I think last year's edition featured Buffy's guildmate, Sigrid of Kvatch:

http://i668.photobucket.com/albums/vv43/Acadian6/Buffy%20I/ScreenShot88.jpg

Buffy sees herself as just a scrawny wood elf. These shots are much more typical of her 'working' clothes:

http://i668.photobucket.com/albums/vv43/Acadian6/ScreenShot479.jpg

http://i668.photobucket.com/albums/vv43/Acadian6/ScreenShot448.jpg

I think Buffy is attractive in an 'elven petite' way, while still fairly 'girl next door'. She can quickly spout off a list of her defects however. Here, she does exactly that in a short snip from Episode 45 of her Journal:

* * *
"You are too pretty to speak with our Lady of Squalor," she sneered. "Come back when you are. . . less pleasing."

Every girl likes to be told that she's pretty, but somehow, Hjolfrodi's words hardly seemed complimentary. I had never considered myself attractive; in fact, my jaw was too square, my mouth too wide, and my lips too fat. The rest of me was too skinny. Oh, and who could overlook my small size and big ears? Once you got past all that stuff though, apparently I wasn't that hard to look at.

I thought my hair was a nice color. Oh, and my eyes too - but then I frowned as I remembered that batting them at men had never gotten me anywhere.

I did consider myself quite fashion conscious, and was acutely aware of what I wore. Of course, Delphine Jend said that being conscious of fashion and dressing well were two entirely different things. She routinely fussed over my choice of clothes.

Was Hjolfrodi right? Was I pretty? I remembered my time in Anvil. One day, several dockworkers were licking their lips and eyeing me like a venison cutlet - part of me kind of liked that, and found it exciting. But then the next day, I heard a man say he would rather sleep with his horse than a Bosmer. I shrugged. Men were too confusing to understand.

Could this scrawny big-eared elf compete with Hjolfrodi's stunning vision of ugliness?

* * *

Now, all that said, as a wood elf, she is quite comfortable wearing nothing but her skin:
