is there a way to fix extreme lagging?

so recently I was playing FNV and i fast traveled to "new vegas steel" and when I spawned the game was lagging soooo badly it became un-playable and i had to restart my entire console to get it to play at its standard rate. this has only happened to me a few times mostly in the DLCs. (ex: in OWB when you went out onto the balcony of your house, or left the sink/think tank, and in Lonesome Road after i detonated a warhead and a few marked men came at me, it would lag really badly) does anyone know if this is a common issue or have any suggestions on how I could prevent/stop whats happening? I though about taking my disc to my local Play n' Trade to get it cleaned for a few bucks, then if that doesn't work maybe buy a new game.

Thanks,

It's the firmware and the patch 1.07. There's nothing wrong with your disk and your PS3.

This lag [censored] better not happen on Skyrim, I don't see a reason why it would and it shouldn't.

But I swear if I experience this on Skyrim...
