Do Two Handers Always Look Like Your Character is Struggling

Post » Tue Nov 29, 2011 8:52 am

I know this seems picky, but I hate the way the two handed swings are. It looks like your character is struggling to swing it. Almost as if it is a ball and chain with a 20 pound weight on it. Two handed swords should never look like such a struggle to swing.

When you get further along does the animation ever change?

Probably because real two handed swords weigh more than a ball n chain with a 20 lb weight on it. So I assume that's what they're emphasizing, that you're swinging a big ass, heavy sword.

I swing a 25 lb battleaxe. You may know it, its called Wuuthrad. I think that's pretty hard to swing, right?

Probably because it is, swinging a claymore is extremely hard work.

I love that they look like some effort is put into them. Adds to immersion.

I could be wrong, but I thought the way two-handed swords are actually held in real life (well in the past I mean) is that one hand is on the grip while the second hand is midway up the blade (the sharpened part does not extend to cover the entire blade). At least I vaguely remember reading that somewhere.

Two handed weapons are extremely fatiguing so swing around in real life, it really does just add immersion.

My character has 60 in two handed weapons and it still takes him a while to recover from a hardcoe swing.

Yeah bro i mean we should totally be able to dual wield two-handers like fury warriors in world of warcraft, cause you know a big sword irl only weighs 20 pounds how dare they make it realistic.

(btw that was sarcasm, just clarifying that for idiots)

No, no they don't. Even the largest of typical two-handed swords might way 10lbs max, and that really is on the high end. The weight is also properly balanced across the length of the blade, not the end, and they have long handles so you can get great leverage over them.

This is what I have been saying. A nice two-hander in real life by a big, strong guy would not look like this. I can see it this way for hammers and maces, but not swords...

You know that an "lb" is a pound, right?

Edit: Never mind, yeah, you're right. The two-handed swords shouldn't be hardly as difficult to swing as the two-handed axes and hammers.

Just as an example, even a Zweihander, which is so massive they were largely impractical, weighed closer to 7 pounds.
So an average might be more like 4-5lbs.
