like, just including arena, daggerfall, and maybe morrowind on one disc for pc or 360 or something... it would be awesome, and probably a big seller.

Will most likely never happen, but http://www.elderscrolls.com/downloads/downloads_games.htm and you can http://store.steampowered.com/app/22320/. Only problem is Daggerfall, and you probably have to use Ebay or Amazon to get that.

I'd pay 800 Microsoft points for Daggerfall on the XBL marketplace. Hell, I'd go for 1200.

heh, you XBOX/PS3 guys will have a HARD time getting Daggerfall to run on those systems.

it will be easier if you just bought/stole/found a old pentium computer with DOS/Windows 95 and did it the old-school way.

Getting the older games to work on a modern PC can be pretty tricky, porting them over to a console would be murderous.

Pete has also said, flat out, that Daggerfall won't be re-released. He didn't go in to details but he seemd pretty adamant. There could be a number of impediments, such as the difficulty in getting it to run and in-game nudity. There's also an old rumor that Bethesda lost some of the source code, but I don't believe that's been substantiated.

It has not. Bethesda's very discrete with matters concerning their older games. I call conspiracy.

I doubt it would ever happen. While Bethesda seems to make a habit of saying one thing and then doing another, they've been rather insistent on their "No more Daggerfall" stance to the point I think they actually mean this one.

Well, if Mr. Hines will not release it, would he be amenable to changing the License to make it freeware? If he has no intention of re-releasing it (and thus making a profit), then he has nothing to lose by allowing the game to be distributed by 3rd parties (the Internet community), as well as edited (and fixed!) by talented folks. Nothing to lose, everything to gain (interest in the TES series, goodwill toward the community, etc.).

Yeah, the time, money, and effort needed to get Daggerfall working properly on modern PCs, let alone making it easy to use on consoles, would probably negate a good chunk of any profits.

They might change their mind about re-releasing it in the future, so gamesas probably don't want to remove that option by doing something as irrevocable as making the game freeware.

I don't have the quote on hand, but I believe it covered re-releasing Daggerfall in either manner. If Bethesda was to start selling Daggerfall again they'd have to get it to work with modern OSs, which would likely be difficult. If Bethesda was to release it for free, similar to Arena, then they'd have a problem with the game's nudity and violence.

So either way I don't see it happening.

But they wouldn't be releasing it - as in, publishing it. They'd just be changing the license, you know? Kind of like how id software releases their games' source engines. Bethesda could just change the license to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open_source_software or something similar. Bethesda doesn't have to even touch Daggerfall again.

Indeed. They can say, "here's Daggerfall, do whatever you want with it, but YOU have to put up with all the programming errors! Ha-HA!"

The best they could do would be to make it freeware. Without any actual source code, they couldn't go with any of the open source licenses.

Shame, really. Its a piece of work, but the content and the difficulty of porting it would prevent such game from ever be release again.

Who needs prisons when the greatest punishment is playing Daggerfall without any patches.

I'd speculate that Bethesda can't release it for free and put it up on their website do to the game's content. Perhaps they could declare it freeware but not release it themselves, but even that could be problematic.

Edit: Bethesda has made me a liar! :biglaugh:

That's exactly what I'm saying - Beth doesn't have to host it, just make it freeware. But... how do you mean it could be problematic?

I don't see how it could be problematic for them to declare it freeware. The nudity and gore is so pixelised that it's pretty tame by today's standards, especially when you consider places like Springvale School in Fallout 3, what with all the dismembered corpses strewn about and little children's skeletons locked up in cages. I found that place far more disturbing than anything Daggerfall's ever thrown at me, including the piles of rotting naked corpses found in some dungeons.

You would be surprised. There are people in this world (like the ESRB and Soccer Moms) who feel that nudity in all its 256 color, 320x200 glory would bring about the end of the world as we know it.
