Morrowind for Free?

Post » Thu Dec 01, 2011 2:38 am

I could be wrong, but I am pretty sure Bethesda said that they would release Morrowind as a free download, just like they did with Arena and Daggerfall, when ES5 came out. If I am remembering this right, it was said around the same time they put out Daggerfall when Oblivion came out.

Are they gonna do this? Or am I just having a stoner moment?

Unlike Arena, or Daggerfall, Morrowind still makes them money. They ain't gonna give up that cow until it runs completely out of milk.

Oh yeah... It's on Steam isn't it?

Oh well. Guess my friend needs to pony up $5 for it. Can't believe he never played it.

Also: I posted this here because, as I said, it was my understanding it would be made free with the release of ES5, which is Skyrim.

It's only like ten bucks from Steam. =/ That is a cent per hour in a normal playthrough, not counting the many excellent mods.

I was replaying it earlier and the graphics are still quite good, actually, even without mods. After an hour or two of play, you don't even notice the blurs or jagginess and you get pulled in.

Morrowind is worth more than 5 dollars, in my humble humble opinion.

Id love to go back and play Morrowind again, I had no idea what I was doing the first time around, I left after about 30 hours of play mainly because the sceenery started getting a little depressing. Id definately play it again though now I understand the game dynamics.

Actually, i lovingly run through Morrowind once a year, and i agree - it's worth more than $5.

Morrowind is one of those games that you want to save your old computer hardware for and hope that B will re-release it with a new graphics engine.

But anyway, sooner or later TES 3 - as we know it, will probably be free like the rest. Hopefully before 32-bit support is removed from modern operating systems so you wont have to run it in an emulator with no sound and 38 tweaks (etc).

They have never said that....anyway, there are much older ES games they could still release first. These are Battlespire and Redguard, both of which pre-date Morrowind.

They have never said Morrowind will be released free.

As long as it's selling on Steam, it'll likely never be released free.

I payed 20 for it earlier this year. It sometimes does go on sale for 5 though.

Good. Let them give away Battlespire for free. Then all the idiots wanting multi-player can play that and realize why multi-player in TES = fail.

Baldur's Gate handled multi-player in an RPG well, because it was designed to be a party game and it had strategic combat. Whether you played single player or multi-player, you had a party of six. TES games are about a single character and are not designed for anything beyond that. They don't even handle companions well.

I heard that Battlespire is nearly impossible to get to run on modern systems, even with the usual tools that help with games like Daggerfall, which might be the main reason why we don't see it.

Anyway, Morrowind still seems to sell, so I don't think we will see it for free anytime soon. Plus, I don't really need a free version of it ;).

All the more reason for a Battlespire remake! I want to see it remade in the Skyrim engine.

They couldn't release morrowind for free as it uses a copyrighted middleware. I don't know what the deal with GameBryo right now (heard they snuffed it) but if it's still under copyright they most probably can't release the game for free.
