Quantity of monsters ~20 ? Disappointed

They are keeping the daedra for an expansion I bet.

Better be a friggen Daedra Zoo then because a TES game without lesser Daedra is like.. well.. not sure but it ain't good.

All enemies are not on that list. For example, i didn't see
Spoiler
Dremoras
, so there could be other creatures/monsters that are not on the list.

If you count sub-types, there are 47 varieties of aggressive, dangerous animals (didn't count the non-aggressive ones, only things like wolves, bears, and sabre cats) and monsters. That's not counting anything that's technically an NPC including vampires... if you add every human enemy type and variation in you've got a very large number of different types of enemies.

Could there be more? Yes. Are there enough to be reasonable and realistic? Yes.

Also, to answer some points from one poster above there are a minimal amount of Daedra to be found in the game (Only Dremora as far as I've seen), but as I understand the purpose of the plot of Oblivion they should have become much rarer afterwards, so that makes sense. And aren't the Dragon Priests basically Liches?

I don't remember the name/place of the quest but you actually kill a lich (what they call it in the game) at the end of a dungeon and it has the same model as a dragon priest.

That's why it's always better to get the PC version. . .

Because eventually some talented & gifted modder(s) will come along and

give us another Classic like http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=17784

WHAT quality? They all fight the same... You just run up and beat the crap out of them til they die.

Noo... I don't see bears using bows now.

They all fight differently, giants run after you and club you into the air, mammoths swing there heads at you but can't get you from certain places. It's all different.

I think next year I'm going to do a new PC build and re-play Skyrim (playing on 360 right now, my Macbook Pro won't cut it). The mods should be good by then and pretty much make it a new game.

I'm still very early in the game (hanging around Whiterun) but I felt like with all of the exploring I've done I should have seen some rather exotic and rare creatures. Could it be that its similar to Fallout 3? Where you had mutants but then about 3-4 different mutant types. They looked pretty much the same but when fighting they were completely different.

Might & Magic is waaaay more "fantasy" based then TES. While there are some silly creatures here, TES is trending towards more realistic things.

Besides, major categories (lumping different classes and humans are 1 category); Skyrim-36 vs M&M 29.

And we have ourselves a true variation winner!

And how do you approach them?

Right, you run at them, scream "DOVAHKIIIIN" and swing your sword. There's no strategy involved like ogres are weak to poison or daedra are weak to shock, probably because the way the skill system works, you have to limit yourself to one (MAYBE two) weapon type, so even if it WOULD be better to fight a certain enemy from afar with your bow, unless you're spending perks on your bow damage, it'll take AAAAGES, whereas your sword will do it quite quick at the expense of you taking more damage.

I have been playing for 10 hours so long. And the lands looked empty to me, so I decided to do a few searches.
You do not ever meet more than 4-5 monsters at time, and this is so bad. But there is more.

List of monsters:
http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Creatures

Ok, do not count fauna please and humans.
What? About 20 monsters? YEP.

SOOO WAY DISAPPOINTED.

Look at Might and magic VI for example:
http://www.the-spoiler.com/RPG/New.World.Computing/might..magic.6.1/mm6.html#tm

Sub included, you have more than 200 kinds of monsters!!!

Damn, please, you could vary in size, gradients, colors, but not so few!!!
I am very disappointed...

You're including sub species to say M&M6 has 200, but limiting Skyrim to I don't know what, since the list you've linked shows about 30-35 hostile enemy types, not including their sub-types, and I don't see Giants or Daedra on there. Plus, you're comparing a list from a 1998 game with animated sprites. I'd wager it takes more work to create one of skyrims creatures than it did to make M&M6's.

i agree, there needs to be more. also, orcs.. need to be orcs. they should have different bodies to men but they dont, just different heads. they should be about 1.5x the size of a man and twice as wide, half as smart.

In Elder Scrolls lore however, orcs are a type of elf (orsinum).

If that is how you want to play, and is the only way you can figure out to play, then alright then.

Personally, I have a lot of fun with all the different strategies I need to use to play with my Poison Master Assassin-Mage. Sure, I might not be able to bash things as effectively as other characters, I'm still decent if I find that I need to use my bow instead of my sword to best eliminate the opponent. Not to mention some monsters DO have resistances and weaknesses. Try killing a frost troll using an ice spell and see how far that gets you.

Yeah I'm a little disappointed by the variation of monsters so far. It seems like I only kill humanoids, animals and undead 80% of the time.

The problem is the world is beautiful and huge BUT empty. Try walking around from a city to another, you just meet always three wolves and three bandits.
