How to get into Morrowind

Post » Wed Nov 30, 2011 8:02 pm

As some of my previous posts have stated I recently bought the Bethesda pack on Steam for $70 (killer deal). I have read the wiki for lore about the Elder Scrolls world as much as I can. My question is what is the main story to Morrowind? Whats the best way to get lost in this game and get attached to it? I could just approach it like any other RPG and just do what I want but I feel like knowing whats going on and knowing my characters general purpose always helps the immersion factor.

So what do you all suggest I do to get svcked into this game? :)

EDIT: I might add that I started playing Skyrim and decided I wanted to play Morrowind alongside with it to maybe help me enjoy Skyrim more.

I would actually recommend not reading about the main story at all. Instead, try to experience it in the game. Seriously - it'll be more fun this way. :)

The MQ in Morrowind isn't developed the way Skyrim's is. It's much more relaxed and designed in such a way that makes you play around with the game before you progress the plot.

So should I just hop in and start playing? Anything I should do first?

Also. Any "must have" mods out there, or shall I say "mods that people can't live without" ?

Yup, definitely just hop in. As for things you should know...hmmm.. early combat is really bad, but it gets much better, so don't let it deter you. But you probably already knew that. Maybe keep in mind that this is a game from 2001, so it should feel dated in the beginning. Once you get over that "strageness" hump, things will hopefully start feeling better.

I wouldn't bother with mods at first, except for maybe the Patch Project and the Code Patch - and maybe some graphics mods if you want. After you get the hang of the game, you'll probably have your own opinions on what kinds of mods you want. In any case, http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1060141-mod-recommendations-for-new-players is good reading.

I'd go vanilla first. Installing mods from the beginning might prevent you from enjoying the game as it was supposed to be. The Patch Project and the Code Patch come to mind. They're both bugfixes (well, the MCP has other cool stuff as well).

Alright and what about "Better Bodies"? That doesn't sound like it will change the vanilla gameplay much. Just fix the graphics of the bodies? I was thinking about Patch Project, Code patch, and Better Bodies. Some of the larger mods that "modernize" the graphics kind of look interesting also, but rather tough to install and get working, suppose I should stay away from those for now?

EDIT: Also during character creation do you suggest I do a custom class or answer his questions and have it pick a class for me? I dont really have any idea what kind of character to play in this game so creating my own class may be tough. Having it pick one for me sounds kind of interesting.

Alright well I installed Patch Project, and Code patch and now the version number on the main menu says MCP 2.0. Is this correct? Am I good to go?

Yes correct

I would recommend texturefix 1.9 & better bodies too.

I started to install better bodies and it asked me if I wanted nvde bodies or bodies wearing only underwear... I dont want to see everyone nvde, nore do I want to see everyone in just underwear. Why is this mod recommended? lol

EDIT: Also I see Texture fix 2.0 is the most current. Should I get that or look for 1.9?

 it means when they have nothing on, what do you want them to look like? completely nvde, or underwear.

It doesnt remove all NPC clothing or anything.

Ah very well then, I'll give it an install. Another question, what difficulty should I play on? I play skyrim on Expert because I dont want it to be to difficult, and not to easy. Not sure where the difficulty slider in this game should be set for someone new to this game that doesnt want it to easy, but still a decent challenge.

I never change the difficulty slider in any ES game. In Morrowind you really dont need to.....if you make it higher, then the start of game will be nearly impossible....make it lower and the entire thing will be a cakewalk.

It really makes no difference, once you reach lvl20 you will be powerful enough to kill most things no matter what.

Part of the fun of Morrowind is not knowing what you are supposed to do. Stumbling around and trying to learn how the various factions interact, how the natives react to you, and having nothing more than a plain generic map forces you to learn about the land, the people and the history. Then you can decide who you really are. Nothing like seeing a creature in the distance and wondering if it is hostile or not, or how powerful it is. Or wondering if you should really be checking out this tomb.

As for creating your character, that is up to you. I know the type of character I want to play and prefer to create the custom class.

As for mods, as others have said, play it without mods first. The exception would be those already mentioned and that you have already installed. I have other mods installed as I play now but that it usually to add 'spice' (land or creatures) to help keep it interesting as I have beaten the game before.

HAve fun and explore the game. There are many wonders out there that you won't find during a quest but you might is you just wander.

Learn to use Mark, Recall, and the Almsivi and Divine Intervention spells as soon as possible. Balmora's temple should have some scrolls and I think Caldera has a Recall amulet so you don't have to recast the spell 42 times as a pure warrior.

Why do I say this? Because early level exploring is brutal (especially if you have low speed/athletics) in the early going. With these tools you can run off in any direction you want as long as you want, and be able to zip right back when you've finished a quest. The game doesn't really do a great job of pointing these conveniences out, but whatever, I'm fine with that.

Of course, they eventually become less pertinent when you are running 200 MPH and jumping over cliffs, or just flying really, but until then...

The only mods I recommend are the bug fixes, Code Patch, and the Unofficial Patch. The game is great on it's own, this isn't Oblivion.

The game is huge and often surprising. There are some really great finds in this game, places you'll stumble into and just go, "Wow." Just don't get overwhelmed, take it slow, and soon you'll be a literal god, even more so than either Skyrim or Oblivion due to lack of level scaling.

Cool that you're giving it a try, it's definitely one of the best games I've ever played.

It might be a little much, but the complete sound and graphic overhall is an awesome mod. It completely updates all the graphics and sounds, and really helps with immersion. It takes awhile to install, and the steps are a little...long...but they have a great youtube video that is about 15 minutes long that shows you step by step how to do it.

Probably not for computer beginners

Return to III - Morrowind
