PC Version - Just How Bad?

Post » Thu Dec 01, 2011 2:14 am

I was originally intending to buy Skyrim for PC for my new rig, but i've been hearing a lot of crap about it having bad bugs (mouse lag?) and a very console focused UI. If need be i can hook up a 360 controller, but i prefer a mouse&keyboard and am wondering, just how bad is it? I know a lot of people tend to exaggerate these things, and a lot of crap was given about Oblivion's UI, though i never found a problem with it. And a couple key questions i guess are -

(1) - Can you hotkey weapons/spells to 1-9 keys

(2) - Can you rebind keys

You can hotkey and it is important to.

You can rebind keys, but it's a bit buggy about it at the moment.

I actually downloaded a mod to rebind my keys proper.

PC. There are minor things that people have been able to tweak out like disabling Vsync and getting rid of mouse lag. Mods are what makes the PC version superior, if you are going to use mods that is.

The UI is pretty awful, but you get used to it after a while. I'm sure a good UI mod will appear soon enough anyway.

Yes you can hotkey and yes you can rebind. The hotkey behavior is kind of messed up with dual wielding (always seems to put things in your left hand first). I thought the UI was going to svck bad on PC since it looked to be designed for consoles, but it works pretty well. Will be better with UI mods, I'm sure, but it's serviceable. Especially with the hotkeys.

Yes and yes. Also, don't listen to the naysayers; Skyrim for the PC is amazing. And if you experience problems with it now, fear not, they'll be patched or modded soon enough.

1. Yes but with the ability to mix and match different spell/weapons/shields its can get frustrating.
2. Yes but sometime it doesn't save it, most likely a bug.

I would never get anything but the PC. You're focusing on the vocal majority, it's a pitfall of confirmation bias. The UI is created for the controller, and it's pretty smooth with the controller. If you're going to play with a controller anyways, get it for the PC.

I've been playing 45 hours now and had two crashes to desktop I fixed with a common fix and some sound issues I fixed with a common fix. Don't pay attention to the console haters, PC is a fine game (one of the best games I've played in my life),

It's worked fine for me, the UI is apparently pretty wonky but I don't mind it too much. Then again I play with a 360 controller because I'd rather play with it than a mouse.

Honestly... When I first started using it, I sort of disliked it and used my controller instead. But then it grew on me, and I reverted back to the mouse and keyboard and been very happy since.

It isn't obvious, but you can assign items in your favourites list to a key buy simply pressing it when highlighted.

Yes you can change keys, although the UI doesn't update the keys you changed, so it will say F for favourite for example, but if you reassigned it to C you just press C and ignore the onscreen tool tip. Apart from that minor niggle, I think it is very nice and works well.

The game itself is stunning, and grown and grown and grown on me. A big improvement over oblivion for feel and story.

2. Yes

1. There is a favourites system in place where you can "favourite" weapons, spells and armours. Press a single button and then a list of all the favourited items will pop up. It stops time, so it might not be for everyone, but it's there. I'm not sure about basic hotkeys though.

No major issues with my Alien Laptop - excellent game and worthwhile getting the PC version especially with the mod support.

Better than any console version that's for sure. But I recommend playing with a pad, we like it or not it's made with a pad in mind and after hours of gaming a pad is actually quite nice to have. I'd love being able to combine keyboard with hotkeys and a pad but i don't think that's posible.

I have the PC version, and despite my poor graphics card, I am amazed at it. It looks like Assassin's Creed on 800x600. You can hotkey things and all. I prefer PC games because the controls are easier to learn, for me, anyway.

Runs and plays great on my PC and this is an old system with outdated hardware (2ghz Core Duo 2GB DDR2 667mhz and 8800GTS 640MB). Running on high settings with shadows on ultra and radial blur on low. Usually get 30+ fps, except for some places where it drops and some stutter. Only 2 crashes so far in 40 hours.

Interface is a bit iffy. Mouse navigation is pretty poor because it doesn't always correctly register the position correctly. The favorites system usually works ok if you use Lmouse and Rmouse. The 1-8 bindings are useful for 2-handed weapons, shield + 1-handed or dual wielding 1 spell. They don't work well with dual wielding spells and don't work at all for dual wielding weapons, as far as I know. Also had some bugs with it when having several weapons of the same type, especially after upgrading them at a grinding stone.

Hopefully Bethesda will put in the effort to patch the interface up to standards, because the game is currently 10/10 and would be 11/10 if the interface would work as intended.

I don't think the interface is amazing, but I prefer it to Oblivion's, actually.

It's not so bad, I feel pretty used to it by now. Mouse lag can be fixed by fiddling with sensitivity. The UI could be more ergonomic, it's clearly a console port just from the menus, but it'll be optimized by mods eventually.
