Companions are permanent dead?

Companions are protected characters. Only you can kill them. That's how it's worked for me anyway.

I'm pretty sure this is the case. In my experience, she'll drop to one knee and enemies will leave her alone, then I'll either whack her once by accident or one of my AoE's will get her (I'm clumsy that way).

The problem is that she's extremely vulnerable in that state, so even the tiniest nip from you and poof! She's dead. I stopped taking her with me because I stealth-kill with daggers and spray-and-pray destro magic if caught. Not a good play style for friends :(

yep, not to mention a flame atronarch exploding, they do that when they die :S

It's weird, actually. Seems like 80% of the time the companion just takes a knee and goes unconscious Fallout style, while the other 20% of the time they die. It's very bizarre.

They take a knee when their health gets extremely low, this is like a super recovery state. Once they go into this, enemies usually ignore them and divert their attention to you. If they happen to take more damage they die.

Lydia died for me during the Quest
Spoiler
where you have to get an elder scroll from that massive dwemer ruin

She took a knee first but she kept getting attacked and she died. It was my first time taking her out with me too :/
And she was carrying a ton of valuable stuff that I couldn't carry, like dragon scales and bones. I had to leave most of it behind D:

Man I didn't even get to say hello to mine. She came up to me but I was like save the chit chat for later we gotta hoof it up that mountain...ran into a damn frost troll on the way and she died. I was quite disappointed, been traveling alone ever since.
