Skyrim: Bethesda Shares Impressive Launch Figures

Tom Hopkins

Bethesda ensures all potential customers get Skyrim.

Published on Nov 16, 2011

Seven million copies of Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim were shipped to retail last week as Bethesda predicts the game's launch will generate $450 million in revenue. Actual sales figures have yet to be revealed.

Robert Altman, boss of Bethesda parent Zenimax said: "Todd Howard and his team at Bethesda Game Studios have crafted a very special game. Anticipation for Skyrim has surpassed any game in our company’s history, and we are pleased that sales and reviews have reflected the quality and hours of amazing gameplay it provides."

Skyrim set a record on Steam with over 280,000 concurrent players on the service shortly after launch. Estimates suggested that Skyrim sold around 3.4 million copies during its launch weekend.

The console versions of the game reportedly have some performance issues, but Bethesda has confirmed it is working on a patch for PC, PS3 and Xbox 360.

Great news and well deserved congrats Bethesda. The game rocks !!!

Probably won't fix the issues on PS3 regarding lag. They didn't for Fallout 3...

Good find OP. Be nice to know what exactly they're patching. I'm sure they'll let us know soon though.

It's probably going to ONLY fix the issues one the PS3. Not the real problems with gameplay.

I hope they fix the keybinding issues on the PC version.

Having to constantly swap my keybinds out because I want to pick up a book is freaking irritating. Plus, I'd like to be able to assign functions to the numpad so my Razer Naga thumb buttons do something functional.

see the real problem with the lag in this game is that all of there models are being rendered in HD. which means that everything that they make for 3d modeling in this game is all high polly. which makes it really tasking on the game consoles (void PC if you Graphics card is good enough). which explains all of the lag that we get on PS3 and 360. Many ppl prolly dont know what i am talking about but i am going to college for game development. pretty much when you make something in 3d it is made up of different polygons. the more detail that they put into the game the more polygons they use. Which in term gives the console more to load at once. which can be good and bad. This game looks way better but at the same time is very tasking. that is the one problem with home entertainment consoles.

If it is 'performance issues'... then it will only be for the slight pauses/freezes with the AutoSave I'll bet. Not too big of an issue, small annoyance but glad to hear they are on it.

Than they need to restore the way you could view your character as you equipped items!

I love how Todd was quoted as saying "It's been 3 days guys. Relax".

I'd love it if I could use my Razor Naga buttons as well, in addition to 1-8.

With $450 million in sales I assume they are proud of the game and can certainly afford to improve the functionality and game issues. Go Bethesda !!!

Should we really be celebrating the fact that they're fixing (mostly) glaring issues that shouldn't have existed at launch anyway?

I mean, I love the game so far but the fact that they released with some of these errors is just ridiculous.. Not trying to hate on Beth, but you never see Rockstar, NDI, or Bioware release games with such glaring issues.

How many of them have consecutive GOTY releases? gamesas goes big with their games, if they had to wait until all bugs were hammered out to release them wed be waiting a lot more than 5 years.

So... it's ok to release buggy games and just say "Eh.. we'll fix it when we want to". I don't think so... if you can't make a solid game that is ready to go from day 1... then wait. Not everyone is able to get patches via online... remember that.

Will probably just fix the game breakers. I don't expect a big gameplay patch for another week or two. I wouldn't be surprised if they released the creation kit first.

Hmm, so what you are telling me is that if a game has lots of polygons on the screen at one time, it's more taxing on the hardware than a screen with less polygons.....interesting theory.

I'm not saying they should fix every little detail, I'm saying that GLARING, IN-YOUR-FACE ISSUES like explosive giant kills (as much as I enjoy that bug,) dismounting my horse and having it fly 2000 yards across the world, having arrows/spears stick in the players for days, among other things should have been fixed. Not to mention that ATROCIOUS UI they got away with (selling that is like high way robbery) and how did the texture bug on the xbox 360 even get through? Wtf?
