No point in using light armor?

Post » Thu Dec 01, 2011 8:43 pm

So I've been leveling light armor and spending perks there since I am going primarily stealth, but I just noticed there is a perk in the heavy tree as well as light that makes that type of armor weigh nothing and not hinder you.. So what could possibly be the point in using light armor long term? Seems like sacrificing defense for nothing in return.

It still makes more noice.

I use light armor, with no perks, they never find me anyway, it's allmost to easy to be a sneaky killer.

Noise and stamina drain when sprinting are the primary difference once you have all the relevant perks.

Also light armor looks way better than heavy armor in this game, dragonscale, nightingale, etc. As we all know the whole point of this game is to explore, kill, and loot things while looking stylish.

Light armor weighs less so has a much less penalty on your stealth.

I don't think the perk is relevant to the stealth penalty, just your burden.

The heavy perk requires a higher investment to get. You may not even be able to earn it by level 30, depending on playstyle. The game exists before level 30 last time I checked. And light armor is affected by the thief stone.

Ahh of course, I forgot about noise. I guess I had sort of assume that noise was tied to weight though.

I think light armor also has the "50% less stamina usage" perk, while heavy armor doesn't. Correct me if i'm wrong.

For you, clearly there is no use for Light Armor.

For me, on the other hand, well... I don't ever (ever) use Heavy Armor, and I'm not a mage so robes are useless, and I need some kind of protection that doesn't come solely from a spell, so...

Not every choice you make in an rpg has to be based on optimal gear choices and selection. Yes in the end heavy armor is probably the best. However my assassin will "choose" to wear Light because thats what she does and I believe its quite silly for a stealth class to use heavy armor.

It's actually 50% stamina regen while wearing light armor, in addition to not having the heavy armor stamina drain when sprinting (which cannot be removed via perks). Light armor is much more mobile than heavy, basically. And also lets you do more.

And who else actually sees your armour? This isn't an MMO so you can't flaunt it to any other players.

I'm sneaky, and use light armor. I spent one perk in it before I realized there's no point. No one can detect me for the most part, and I'm not even done with my sneak perks and skill. If your a sneak there's no point in wasting perks in light armor, sneak eventually cancels out most of the downsides to armor. Plus if your wearing db boots that helps more. I did an experiment and boots with 30% sneak will make a noise and you'll be seen, wear the db boots and they don't hear you, or atleast it's more of a benefit the + 30%.

The +50% stamina regen perk is great for someone who dual wields. It essentially boosts my damage per second by about 50%, amazing imo.

Yeah, with 100 in each skill and max perks, Heavy Armor is a lot more protective but becomes weighless later, while Light Armor can be made weightless earlier, is easier and less expensive to find/buy/make, is quieter, and is more mobile due to perks. Heavy Armor has, what, a punching bonus and less falling damage? Heh.

Actually Light Armor and it's related perks are much better for a stealthy fast killer. It is the optimal choice in this case. No noise + Stamina regen + dual wielded daggers = win!

There's no downside to using heavy armor over light in this game. I've got 2 points in the first perk of Sneak, as well as the -50% noise from armor perk, and I'm already virtually undetectable while wearing all heavy armor.

That is, as long as you're using bows. If you're looking to sneak right up onto your target and attack using a melee weapon as the above poster, then light armor is going to be better until the later levels.

Best thing about Skyrim is you probably -could- be a heavy armor wearing thief. It'll just be a bit more of a hassle for a while until you get the appropriate perks.

I for one, will certainly be wearing daedric armor on my thief. And figure out how to powerlevel it.

You're right. There is no point for a stealthy character. Better off putting your perks in Archery, Sneak, Alchemy, or One-Handed. In general, I think this game treats players better if they pick 2 skills to fully max on the perk tree and 2 secondary skills to perk up once the first 2 are filled.

I tend to disagree as the passive stamina regen is extremely useful if you're doing zoom slow shots (which is where archery becomes ridiculous). Besides if you're ranged why ARE you wearing heavy armor? Enemy archers? They're always my first target.

my sneak is so high that I have literally had suspicious enemies look right at me 3 feet away and couldn't find me. That is a bit imba. I like that they got rid of instant detection but that is a bit ridiculous

Im using light armour with a shield for my warrior character.

Mainly to try it out as i thought the lower weight would be good and blocking most attacks meant heavy could be unnecessary. Atm im unsure.
