Thieve's Guild Letdown

Post » Fri Dec 02, 2011 11:04 am

TL;DR version: Did anyone else complete the Thieve's Guild quest line and find it utterly disappointing? I sure did.

I played Morrowind probably more than any single player game I've owned. Oblivion was less fun, but the Thieve's Guild quests were great. The Grey Fox's mask was crazy overpowered, but I felt a huge sense of accomplishment with it and the last quest and the overall impact on the game world. With all this in mind, I have been waiting on Skyrim for a long time, and the first thing I did was find the Thieve's Guild and that quest line.

Only once have I ever been more disappointed in a game.

Spoiler alert!

The final boss lead up with the Nighshades was fairly cool, but really, killing Mercer had no impact on the world as a whole. In contrast, in Oblivion, I STOLE AN ELDER SCROLL. The difference in epic perception is palpable.

And it does not stop there. I go back to the guild, and it still looks like a rat hole. There was no ceremony marking me as the guild leader as mentioned in the Twilight Sanctum. Brinjolf is "too busy to talk to me", and the rest of the guild members address me as sister. Where is the guild leader part?

But really, when it comes down to it, Nocturne hit it right on the head. Honor, and philosophy are all well and good, but it really is all about the reward. I gave up a fairly useful Skeleton Key for what? An invisibility spell that I have a better version of in many flavors? Really?

End spoiler

What happened Bethesda? Are there plans to extend this questline? Is there someone out there working on a mod to do this right?

MINOR SPOILERS IN POST. NOTHING MAJOR.

I'm shocked that nobody else has responded in two days. It almost seems like there is some sort of bug with the quest line that is preventing it from being continued. The quest line itself was fairly decent. I enjoyed it. At the end, though, there wasn't really a big payoff. Where is my "leader" quarters? Why is there no way to fill the vault with cool stuff again? Why is there no key to the vault in which you have to ask a member to unlock it with you? Why does the whole guild hall still seem run down and not spruced up? Why can't I have Mercer's old house?

Why do I get the feeling that Bethesda is going to offer us DLC to "complete" the end of the quests later on?

I agree, the thieves guild was a huge letdown.
*Spoiler*
The first couple of tasks are cool, then it turns into the nightingale thing and it's all downhill from there. I too returned to the thieves den expecting at least some minor changes, and got nothing at all. The only other guild line I've finished is the DB one, and it was 100x better in terms of actually doing something epic.

I agree that the thieves guild quests were a let down. Many of them didn't feel to..... authentic. Not much stealing, or sneaking around.

so, let me first caveat and say that I have not completed the Thieve's Guild quest yet, but I was still pretty instantly disappointed with it, and here's why:

  • I feel like a hired thug, not a freelance thief. Harrassing and intimidating business owners? Forging business ledgers? Seems like someone took a page from the Godfather rather than Ocean's Eleven. I want to play crafty, not dirty.
  • I know I am a low level still, but 100 gold reward for evading mercs, breaking into a safe, and burning beehives? I spent some time on that quest, and I made 10x as much in 10 min just looting the mead barrels at Black Briar.
  • All my fellow thieves are so depressing, and angry. Maybe because they don't like being thugs beholden to Maven either?

just my opinion...

I didn't feel let down at all. Oh wait, we're talking about Thieves guild questline, not Nightingale questline. Nevermind. It was a total letdown. Felt like Dark Brotherhood miniature edition.

Im just gonna say one thing: have you guys ever heard about the achievement "one with the shadows"? - Think of it, if nothings changed in your hideout, you are not finished!

Thief guild doesn't finish with the Nightingale questline. At some point during the quests one of the NPC tells you that to restore the guild to its former glory you need to restore its standing in each of the cities. I'm not going to give any more away than that. I enjoyed the thief quest line and the whole nightingale part the most so far.

Yeah man, you haven't finished. You're not the leader yet. I was definitely disappointed in the thing, but at least I finished it before forming an opinion. :whistling:

I didn't think it was too bad. After the gray fox and actually stealing an elder scroll in Oblivion, you couldn't really have too high of hopes for the guild in Skyrim. It just isn't easy to top that. Being screwed by a thief and then introduced into an exclusive band of thieves wasn't a bad story.
