Anti-cheat method?

Post » Sun Sep 20, 2009 2:20 pm

I'd be willing to shell out $20 a month just to play on servers that are guaranteed to to be hacker free.

"Hack free" is pretty much impossible. Technology is always evolving, new methods are always discovered. It's like saying "if any viruses get past my anti-virus, I'll never use it again." An antivirus program can't protect against every single virus. This is why they recommend you run more tan 1 antivirus program, more than 1 spyware program, etc.

This is very true Horse, but many games fight hacking and permanently ban offenders. FPS games seem to have a lower standard, or perhaps hackers tend to target this genre more than others. Either way If a serious anti hacking approach is taken, than it makes a huge difference in the community and ends up eliminating a huge portion of the problem relatively quickly. It's the tolerance of hacking and the lack of effort in most FPS's to eliminate it that causes my concern. I hope Brink takes a different approach to fighting hackers than your standard FPS where hacking tends to run rampant.

Currently the best anti-cheat is good/active server admins and Punkbuster.

Brink will be using VAC on PC to "police" the hackers. I doubt any other, separate steps will be taken by SD or Bethesda.

I think that the pc version will have a reliable admin command system. I loved the easy way to ban or harrass cheaters on ET.

The Anti-Cheat system is going to be the deciding factor in what platform I get this game on. I love playing on my PC more than my Xbox. And after making the mistake of buying MW2 on PC and seeing all the cheaters ruining the game, I have little faith in VAC.

Possibly the best anti-cheat system I have ever seen was Renguard for C&C Renegade. The program was not required to play the game, but it was a good idea to run it. When you started Renguard it would check all your files before launching the game and made sure nothing was altered. Once in the game you could access the console and if you suspected someone of cheating you could use a command to see if they were running Renguard or even put a vote up to force the player to leave until they activated Renguard. If you had Renguard active, you couldn't be kicked unless it was by a server admin.

Im afraid of being banned from brink if it uses VAC cause when i took a break from MW2 and steam i guess i got hacked or something cause i got banned from MW2, but it did help with my addiction to it. It is playable when you rush and not noob tube which is far to OP.

Just out of curiosity, Would it be invasion of privacy for the game to come stock with a program that was required to run while the game was running that scanned the config and checked for running processes?

I don't think i would mind it, if it kept game-play fair and didn't dominate my system. Then again i don't even know if this is possible.

Although as a learning programmer, finding an answer to this for all would be game creators would be kinda cool.

Blizzard had something similar called http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warden_%28software%29, some people considered it spyware since it looked at your active processes. As long as you were informed about it at installation and it keeps the game fair, there really isn't anything to complain about.

Yes but what happens when the admin is abusive and over uses his power than he is worse than a hacker.

general question, does anybody know how coop via web or MP are hosted. according to the SD guys its a seamless switch from off- to online. if i start offline in SP do i host the game? or does "my" game (now in coop) switch to a public SD server?
if its hosted on my machine, well, then i'd have VAC and my admin rights as back up!

Thats the best part about server browsers, you leave that server and find another.

This is where the consoles win out......er THE console wins out, PS3.
This seems to be a pretty hacker proof platform so far, maybe a real determined one could do it.

I don't understand the mentality of hackers, they buy/pirate a game to play then make there own game/rules up.

I'll stick to the PS3 version even thought the PC may have the better graphics.

What is going to keep this game from becoming a genre-smashing CoD MW:2. How do you guys intend to keep people from destroying the multiplayer side of your game, which lets face it IS what will keep getting you money either from DLC, or monthly or whatever you guys plan to do. Please just don't release and forget. There are hundreds of thousands of fans that are waiting for a good fps that isn't >v

umadbrah- 119-0
l33thaxor- 57-4
you and the 6 other people not hacking- 9-25

Yea, I agree.
I hate when almost everyone hacks on COD MW2, It so ridiculous.
I really hope that they keep up with cleaning out the hackers.
