There is a ledge you can get on to the left of the path, eventually the troll will wander in the open and you can kill it with a bow. It took me around 80 arrows....also tell your NPC companion to wait for you down the path, and leave your horse as well.

You can go around the troll; there's room on the left around the rocks...
