Bethesda:"90% of [Elder Scroll] audience is on the consoles"

Post » Sat Dec 03, 2011 1:51 pm

Just hours ago we reported The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim wouldn't be seeing much PC love in the graphics department (at least not for now), and a new statement from game director Todd Howard seems to explain why.

"90 per cent of our audience is on the consoles," he says, speaking about the possibility of bringing modding to the Xbox 360 and PS3. "So 90 per cent of our audience can't even see this thing. So if we can solve that we'd like to.”

The way it looks it's as if every developer are giving up on PC gaming and making thing purely for consoles. Hacks and piracy are starting to become the end to PC gaming, and devs are taking refuge with console hardware rather than trying to solve the problem.

Its not a bad things I mean when I sit down to play a game I generally just want to do just that no, no msn, virus scans in the background and the comfort of a wireless controller I mean this is just me. Piracy is terrible on pc, movies, games, music I just can't believe how much some of my friends take..take take... so ungrateful and don't give a **** about the man and women hours behind it. Now if Microsoft would ban hackers, glitchers, cheaters and have a nice kick button for hardcoe mode when dumb teammates forget what team there on that would be awesome. Plus the next consoles will be a bit stronger in performance and more of a general audiance on them.

Video games are like chocolate covered crack for me especially Crysis 2

90%? Have they even heard of the PC bethesda games modding community? Last I checked it's pretty damn big.
Oh and regarding the 2 comments above this, u guys do know piracy is also on the consoles right? And last I heard, it's growing at a faster rate on consoles than on the PC.

Since the game and its atmosphere seems to look pretty sweet on the consoles, I'm fine with the PC game's graphics looking similar to the consoles. (Force some AA and texture filtering and I'm good) HOWEVER, if the game is ridiculously buggy on the PC due to lack of care for the quality of the release, I'll be pissed.

Seems like PC gamers are getting less love these days. :(

Thanks to freakin' piracy. Consoles don't kill PC gaming, piracy does.

So, your logic is piracy on a medium used for playing video games, "kills" games made for that medium?
I.E. PC piracy is killing PC gaming?
Then good sir, would you mind explaining how console piracy fits in there, if console games haven't budged an inch and yet they are pirated too?

Piracy killing PC games is a lie produced by gaming companys to give an excuse for putting out shoddy console ports and complaining that their game didn't do so well.
First I recommend everyone read this, to get another view.
Also I found this gem and gives me hope that game developers are not all selling out making crappy port overs like Crytek did and seemingly like Bethesda is doing...sad panda there.

I don't know whether you're denial or just plain ignorant.

And would you mind to tell me and other people where you get this info from ? (in your head ?)

And last I heard, it's growing at a faster rate on consoles than on the PC.
Whether it's growing at a faster rate or not, piracy on consoles is definitely not as common as on PC.

Hence "console games haven't budged an inch and yet they are pirated too".

What I meant by "haven't budged an inch" is you are saying PC gaming is getting worse due to piracy, but piracy is also on consoles, and yet console games aren't getting worse. I'm pointing out the flaw in your logic.

PPl do know that iphones and nintendo ds has more than 80% piracy rate? yet they are making a killing. Ppl pirate games because they cant afford it and it usually happens in developing countries.

Consoles have piracy too. Alan wake was pirated 1.3 million times. Also there are grey market piracy. In most cases, ppl dont pirate the game from bittorrents. There are lot of shops in the developing countries that sell pirated copies of games, just like they sell pirated copies of music and movies.

There is no hard statistics for that market and hence publishers assume there is no piracy on consoles.
StarCraft 2 sold 4 million in 1 month that game was not even on steam. So tell me again hows piracy is killing pc gaming? Black Ops sold 1.6 million copies on steam alone in 2 months. Publishers are too much focused on illegal downloads number, which are at best estimates and have high margin of error.

Many games have generated substantial revenue from PC.

Steam hit nearly $1Billion in PC sales last year as well. Look for the post Cry-Tom (Or Adam) ((Cant remember which)) put in the Off-topic that is titled "Steam kicks ass in 2010". While I personally don't like piracy, I can't say it's killing PC gaming. I mean, I'm not sure what the profits would be if there was no piracy, but $1 Billion in combined revenue is a crapton of money. XD

This. I also love how everyone ignores all the games that get leaked out on consoles before they are even released.
