Mages Guild as a non-mage?

Post » Sat Dec 03, 2011 5:10 pm

Ok, so on my first character, I rolled a Kahjit thief and made him the kind of evil that even Hell itself would throw back.
Spoiler
I went through the thieves, guild, Dark Brotherhood, fully upgraded my sneak and other skills Deepscorn Hollow and Dunbarrow Cove and went through Shivering Isles. Taking my place as Sheogorath
was the end of that character's story.

Now, I'm re-rolling one more character before Skyrim to tackle my final achievements which are the achievements for the main quest, arena, fighters guild, and mages guild. Thing is, I rolled a knight. The achievements for the main quest, fighters and arena shouldn't be a problem, but I'm not really a magic based character though I want the mages guild achievements. Not sure if doing the mages guild on my knight would hurt anything or if I should roll a more magic oriented character. Getting all the achievements in the game would really be my way of closing the book on Oblivion and jump straight into Skyrim.

Edit: Forgot to add I also need to get the Knights of The Nine Achievements as well XP

Well, there's no evidence that magic training is limited to only a few types of people. A knight learning some simple restoration magics, or alteration, or illusion or even some destruction. A battlemage focused more on the battle part and less on the mage.

Besides, I just went through most of the mage's guild without casting a single per quest. Scrolls and enchanted weapons/armor though.... :whistling:

Thanks, I'll just keep on playing as is. Also forgot to mention I have yet to get the Knights of the Nine achievements as well. I expect to be finished with all of this close to Skyrim time, maybe a day or two after. Hopefully sooner so I won't have to force myself to ignore my Skyrim copy to finish what I want to do on Oblivion. XD

Dang, spoilers! Just a quick heads up- if you're not going to put your post in the hints, cheats and spoilers section, put quest spoilers in spoiler tags.

I don't think the mages guild forces you to do spells. It might be good to do the questline with a spell-casting character though, just so you can have fun with all the different types of spells and still have it fit with your character.

Unfortunately you can become Arch Mage with all crummy magic skills, and you don't have to cast a single spell, not counting scrolls. There is only one point were you need to use a few scrolls or spells. But anyone can use a scroll.

That is a major roleplay downside, in my opinion. Just like a wimpy little mage with 30 strength and mudcrab like endurance, can do the entire Fighters Guild questline without picking up a single weapon.

I could not agree more.

I started out being a "Completionist". Not for the Achievements, ( Those things have absolutely ZERO meaning, to me.) but for the point of doing everything possible in one playthrough. With a game like Obl, it really takes away from the replay value. Still... Obl has one of, if not, THE highest replay values of ANY game I've played, total completion or not.

Committing one char to one faction, is better. Although I admit, I will progress through one, to a point. If it contains a reward that is fitting for my current char. Kind of like a Recon mission.

Yes, my apologies. I just simply wasn't thinking at the time. :(

Despite the criticism of a non-mage becoming the Arch Mage, my 900 hour main character is proud to have gotten there. Baa is a stealth archer, a Brit Adventurer, who shoots enchanted bows and used spells only early on to open locks and to do the Mages Guild quest at Vahtacen. She’s also Fighters Guild Master, Arena Grand Champion, and did the Crusader Quest up to the point of picking up the gauntlets because she heard that if you finished it a glitch would keep her from sitting. Well she likes to sit down at the table with her companion in the pirate ship at the Imperial City docks, so that wasn’t going to happen. All that was a couple of years ago. Since then she has wandered around exploring and doing whatever she wants, closing Oblivion gates, climbing mountains, taking pictures, playing with Mods, and adding to her eight million gold pieces.
