At what point does Martin turn unessential during Defense of

I believe when the fighting occurs, and then stops when you enter the main Oblivion gate (Defense of Bruma)

I believe its when you are told to run for the Chapel in the IC he turns non-essential (LtD)

I entered the Bruma gate at one point and recieved a "martin has died" message.
