Just an animal and a humanoid.
Of course at some points you have larger amounts of people accompanying you, but I don't wanna spoil anything.

You can buy a dog outside Markarth for 500, or find Meeko the dog for free at Meeko's Cabin to the west, on the way to Solitude. Meeko's pretty weak, I'm assuming the Markarth dog is stronger.

Those are the only two that I know of.

Also, like others have been saying, it's one human, one beast and one conjured follower. Your companions can also conjure their own creatures, and I don't think those are included in the number of total followers.
