Ignoring two excellent mechanics that were intentionally provided for your use.

Fascinating.

I am fascinated by the fact that people do this. Or claim to do it.

For the record:

Saving != cheating.

VATS != cheating.

Saving + VATS != cheating.



It fascinates me that someone would take the time and trouble to annoy others by posting here to tell us how annoying he finds our personal gaming preference to be.

When you pay me lots of money to change my ways I`llbe like you, until then, keep yapping, no one will care.

I misunderstood your post.

Nobody is claiming something here. We are talking about other ways to play the game. Obviously, you cant understand that there are other ways. About calling VATS an "excellent mechanic"... well, thats a matter of tastes, but many here dont think so.


Well. I started a game from the outside of the Vault with the intention of playing "dead is dead", no V.A.T.S. and a highly reduced carry capacity (an option in FWE). I just killed some riders and found caps enough for buy a portable bed. I will post how long can I go.

Why no VATS?

**BTW, The Witcher 2 supposedly has an 'Insane' difficulty mode that gives you one life for the entire game. :chaos:

VATS is cheating, for me. You have a ... workable FPS game and hiding in VATS destroys immersion. I think a quicksave after completing a section,quest or a fair bit of time it would be a useless pain to redo is just right. A qucksave during combat, I have certainly done it on difficult sections, is cheating. I justify it by understanding that if I had my Stalker character and mechanics I would clear this in reasonable condition. I do not do this in Stalker games which I judge to be fair.

I play on very hard in Fallout and master in Stalker.

I can understand a player that has already beaten the game and wants add challenge to a new game under the handicap of not using VATS, not that it is cheating but that it is overpowered to someone that already finds the game too easy because they've mastered the controls. But I find Fallout 3 to have to much opportunity to die unfairly:

mines blending into the ground or placed where you are not ready; weapon jamming when you really need the firepower; a disadvantage in the battlefield; accidentally falling to your doom; that rigged truck on the highway overpass; etc

I found that V.A.T.S. boring and it breaks inmersion, as someone pointed before. "Oh, there are five riders shooting at me! Wait a moment... Stop!!! We will see... Should I shot this one on the head...? No, this one is reloading. I think... yes! that one in the corner...! on the head? mmmh... too dificult... Better in a leg..."

FWE has a similar feature, "Bullet time" (I think). All moves slowly (Matrix style) for some seconds. Thats really fun and inmersive. I love it.

Its funny... but that is actually the very thing you are intended to do in the series; Its the way Fallout was designed, and how it works in every Fallout game to date ~That's series gameplay. That's exactly how it is supposed to be ~but FO3 only does this in VATS, and not as the regular method of play during combat (like the rest of the entire series before it).

There was no VATS in the previous series. (Well, technically there was a location in the game that was called "the Vats". It was just what it sounds like, huge vats of FEV).

As karate taught me, time doesn`t slowdown when in fast action. Just your senses react automatically and therfore faster than usual.
That's not the point of it, or what it was doing... Time does not slow down from the perspective of the PC. The game splits the seconds into chunks for the player to be able truly examine what's going on. From the combatant's perspective, it would all be happening at once, with no delays. (This... despite the awkward situations possible from sequential turns).

Its similar to.. say... an investigator watching a bank robbery on video a few frames at a time, and noting all the details ~details impossible for any one of the participants to have seen it all. The difference is that in the game's case, the player can creep their way way through the conflict with informed decisions and turn a losing battle into a victory.

Well, I wasn`t really talking about Vats but the FWE slowmo Matrix thing. But anyway, I don`t use Vats since I don`t think it`s necessary in this type of game.

Another thing I dont like of VATS is that you can use it all the time for checking if there is somebody near and it gives you the right position of every enemy. If you do it all the time, you dont need to be concentrated and gameplay isnt the same. I can′t say that this is cheat. "Cheat" is a stupid word in a game where everyone write his own rules, but is just that the game miss quality for me. Is our daily dose of adrenaline we are searching for with this kind of games. Isnt...? :gun:

However, you didn't have the silly 90% incoming damage reduction mode which VATS has in previous games. Which is why VATS is kinda cheesy, really, even though it's sometimes pure fun to be able to throw a bunch of grenades at your feet in VATS while cornered and see everyone but yourself explode in gory chunks. :D

New try: Playing again "dead is dead". Im in level 3 now. Sneaking and exploring for get some experience. Always attaking from the back and aiming to the head, running if things get dangerous. My first problem: to find ammunition.

Now-now Gizmo.

The intention of the series was the scenario and similar game-contents.

Dated mechanics were not the basis of the scenario sequels.

The early Fallout sequels were a mix of RPG and Board-Game mechanics, but game mechanics have evolved into full RPG now, but still VATS is there as a choice of play for those that want it.

Personally, I stopped using VATS and believe me, it is not too difficult at all in playing that way. VATS makes the game way-way too easy, (as Board-Game play made the game "just-too-easy" in the early sequels), and that's playing on very-hard setting.

Full RPG is the way to go, and yes I can make aimed shots (and hits) to a right-arm, thigh or head. That's true RPG role-play and is how the game has evolved into Fallout 3. Way to go Bethesda!

Give it a try guys, it's so much more fun. ?A bunch of them, try taking them on separately, it's not too difficult it usually entails ducking back into a doorway or something like that, as I usually do with a bunch of Talon Mercenaries.
