If they are miscelaneous quests, you have to go into the quest menu, click the word 'miscelaneous', and then click the quest you want to do. This will then put markers on mthe map. Both have to be highlighted.

That works most of the time, but I've had quests where the marker han't shown up at all even with it selected and even if I press X to go to where it is on the map.

I take it you are on Xbox like me then?

Go into the quest menu.

Go down to 'Miscellaneous'

Press A

Then go to the quest you want.

Press A again.

Now that the quest has been chosen, you can press X to go to the map marker.

The game seems to have issues with displaying too many quest markers at once - all of them will always appear on the map and (I believe) compass, but the free-floating ones in the main world view can get lost. Turn off markers for a few quests in your journal (toggling the "miscellaneous" group off is a good choice if it's not a misc objective that you're looking for) and the markers for the ones that are still enabled should reappear.
