For completeness: here is my bug (plus "solution")

Post » Sun Dec 04, 2011 7:14 pm

Hi All,

(sorry if hardcoe gamer know all about this bug plus solution already)
my bug is that I can start the game -> play with no problem (== no crash) -> then I quit the game and then it crashes when it gets back
to the desktop to this little Fallout Startup window. Then I cannot start the game again. The solution is to right click the game in steam,
do an integrity check of the software and then it downloads one file which it seems to delete every time on exiting the game.
Then I can play again. But I have to do this every time.

-> hilarious! ;-) but what the heck, that's life, nothing is perfect!

Cheers

What file is it that keeps getting deleted?

Here's a possible solution:

1) Find the file and right click on it.
2) Under properties check "read only"

Probably won't work though because, at least in windows 7 and vista, read only does not prevent an administrator, owner or program with administrator rights from deleting files. I'm pretty sure that's to prevent someone from screwing up the advanced permissions and rendering files both undeleteable and without any user being able to alter the permissions again to fix it.

I don't know which file it was. The problem disappeared yesterday somehow then. Maybe steam updated the game again.

It still always crashes when I exit the game but when I launch it again it does not crash anymore (due to missing file).

Btw. I do not run as admin and if the problem happens again I can try your hint.

Cheers
