Nostalgia plays a big role.

When Morrowind came out, people complained it had less skills than Daggerfall.

When Oblivion came out, people complained it had less skills than Morrowind.

When Skyrim came out...you get the picture.

BUT, most of what you're saying here just because of your own nostalgia, friend. If Morrowind had crafting back then and now Skyrim came out and the only way to get good gear was from item hunting, I bet you'd be complaining for the opposite reasons you are now.

This!

I love Morrowind to death (it's my second favorite of the series), but most of my good feelings towards it come from the fond memories I have of exploring a crypt for the first time or hearing the theme song at the title screen. NOT because the game was superior in story or mechanics. The Elder Scrolls have always suffered from hammy stories and they probably always will -- it's part of the charm if you think about it for a second.

Remember to look past those rosy shades, dude. :)

Thats my point too. If you were to reverse the release of both games, there would be FAR more whining about missing features.

Basically, if you want Morrowind back, you play Morrowind. If you want a game that has got all the features, all the "depth" and "sense of mystery" (overrated, really)

If you believe that you shouldn't even be playing Skyrim. Pong should have been enough for you.
WTF is this 'depth' people are constantly rambling about?

Compelling gameplay beyond just mechanics (ie. having a world that is more than just a "shell" full of dungeons and little else. Fleshed out, interesting factions that require more than 4-9 dull quests to become the heads of. Opportunities to make decisions (or in a TES game's case, at least a better illusion of it). Not being railroaded, etc.)

People are retards.

I bet if Bethesda made Morrowind again with exactly the same content but using the Skyrim engine, there still would be threads like:

"The original Morrowind had those clunky faces, and unrealistic animations. I miss them. The new Morrowind is just too good-looking. It takes away from the 'depth'. Also the new combat is totally an appeal to the masses. I want to swing my sword repeatedly and miss my opponent all the time if my skill is low. I like that (makes me feel special - in a gamer elitist kind of way).

I'd say it's a fairly irrefutable fact actually.

Some people might prefer Skyrim, and even consider it a better game... but comparing the two purely as open-world RPGs, there's really no contest at all.

Pfffft. Learn what irrefutable means.

And don't make posts that are trolling to "get under someone's skin". The rest of you, don't bother to rise to easy bait, it just derails threads.
