Need help making a Conan the Barbarian-esque character

Post » Mon Dec 05, 2011 1:47 pm

After getting dirt bored with my mage Ive decided to make a Nord Barbarian, but its lead to a tonne of questions-

1. Would light armour and two handed weapons leave me vulnerable? If so would taking some block perks mitigate it?
2. Of the bonus weapon perks which do you think is the most effective? (e.g. axe bleed damage, ignoring armour with maces etc)
3. Seeing as Im gonna have low mana is using soul trap to keep my weapons charged gonna be tricky? And how early do you get silver weapons to deal with undead?
4. Is archery any good without perks?

Cheers for any help you can give!

1. yes but you should out damage your enemies with more stamina available
2. I like the swords for crit (if you want to play 'Conan')
3. You can put Soul Trap on your weapon fairly easily. You get silver weapons early if you do the Companions quest line sooner than later.
4. Eh, it's better than just waiting for a Dragon to land.

So it creates a high risk/high reward style of play? Thats awesome, I love builds like that.
And to be honest archery is there so I dont have to get close to the spiders- Im fine until I can see the mandibles/eyes but then I just turn into a quivering wreck.
Would just taking the +DMG perks be enough?

Thank you!

The game is so easy I go around almoust nacked , but if you rise the difficulty no matter what armour you wear enemies kill you in 1 blow ... bad level scaling bad balancement ...

I'm focusing on light armor (something new for me) and I haven't applied any perks to my archery skill and it's still been pretty effective. Particularly when you're using sneak. If you're playing a Conan-like character, I highly recommend you develop your sneak abilities.

I agree ... only reason to go with light armor over heavy is if you are doing either spellsword or char that wants to use some cunning tactics. Sneaking with a 2h weapon sounds awesome. Very witcher like ... and conan was not stupid either.

Read the books. Conan is usually portrayed as a sellsword but was also an ocassional thief. Yes, thief.

Hell, he silently climbed up a tower himself.

I'm going to do a Conan build on my second play through. This is what I am planning for him:

Primary:

Sneak (Conan actually started as a thief)
Light Armor
Smithing (I believe his father was a Blacksmith)
Two-Handed
Block (appropriate with a shield or a two-handed weapon)
One-Handed

Secondary:

Speech (surprisingly, he was very good at persuasion and intimidation)
Archery (not his weapon of choice, but he did use them somewhat, I believe)
Heavy Armor

Definitely NO magicka use, but magic weapons and armor should be reasonable.
He rode horses often.
He frequently had companions.
He hated mages.

Don't know if this helps, but this is what I'm planning.

Absolutely! Don't forget, many of Conan's adventures involved his time as a thief. In the books he's described as big, but having a very athletic build. He's not the lumbering Schwarzenegger brute that Hollywood made him into.

Sorry, didn't meant to come up as an ass. :sadvaultboy:

Two-Handed
One-Handed

I am not sure about the 2 hander. Isn't Conan always portrayed wielding a broadsword in one hand and such? It's been a while since I've read the novels, heh.

LOL! S'all cool. I love Conan so it's cool to see someone who wants to develop a character like that.

In Oblivion when you got to custom name your class, I called myself The Cimmerian. :D

You know, that's one of the coolest things about Conan. It doesn't really matter where you start since none of his stories were ever written in a chronological order. Every story was a "snapshot" of Conan's life and Robert E. Howard never established a defined timeline. He only actually wrote 2 full novels, I believe, "The Red Nails" and "Hour of the Dragon." You could start with one of those. Most of his other tales were short stories which have been collected in various compilations. Check Amazon, you should be able to find something.

EDIT: BTW, anything written after 1936 was by other authors other than Robert E. Howard.

Also, if your interested in some other great barbarian fantasy, check out Karl Wagner's "Kane" books. Those are a lot of fun too.

And Karl Wagner even wrote a few Conan books as well.
