story discontinuity

i read in the compendium that in cutscenes if you're online the avatars get replaced with that that of the people you're playing with
but lets say a character appears in more than one mission you won't be able to tell- and that may be significant to the story
or maybe sd didn't make the story like that

No, I think the cutscenes will just give a dramatic overview of the events to come. (or if you're playing a campaign-like mode where all maps are in order, you'll partly get flashbacks). I guess they probably select random chars to appear in the cutscenes. If you want to get rid off the same cutscenes over and over, you'll be able to skip them.

Think about it in this way: In mainstream FPS you're part of a squad that operates together. In Brink you're a special forces member and you'll be put into a squad of specifically trained elite troops who have to work toghether for one or more missions, depending on the situation.

oh yeah i guess so
but then i guess the story isn't that strong if characters can be replaced that easily

I'm pretty sure there will be persistent NPC's... you know, the characters you protect, or hunt, are NPC objectives, and thus always static.

There could also be (and almost certainly are) characters off-mission that are persistent who just aren't in the battles.

If you're playing "singleplayer", you'll be partnered with the same guys over and over. The story BEHIND what you're doing is strong, but the link with your squadmates isn't, atleast not in MP. That's what I'm trying to tell: Most games are played from the viewpoint of one character and you're always teamed up with the same guys. In

Brink you are the main character and it's all about what you do in combat, not everyone else. (Only storywise though)
Atleast that's how I think it'll be.

Persistent NPC's will probably be the A.I. squad commander. They'll also be persistent if you play SP. However it's confirmed that in MP, players characters will appear.

Maybe everyone will see the same cutscene when it comes to text, but with different characters.

no no, I know that the PC's in combat take place of "combatants" in the cutscenes and that for each player, their character will probably take the "main character" roll for these scenes... I'm talking about any storyline cutscenes that involve off battlefield context... talking to your CO/Cell Leader in person for example,
