New Player - Random crashes in PC Oblivion and Fallout 3: NV

Post » Mon Dec 05, 2011 11:17 pm

Greetings!

So I got a new smokin' machine, and figured I would go back and enjoy Fallout New Vegas and Oblivion with maxed graphics settings. I have only played them on the XBOX previously. The games run great, graphics look great, no real gameplay problems. However about once a day they will just crash. I don't seem to be doing anything in particular in Oblivion, and in Fallout New Vegas it almost always is associated with a autosave event (corrupting the save in the process - yeah). I haven't noticed any other problems with the machine, but don't know if there is something I should be diagnosising or if its just expected. I know that as an ex-MMO player WoW didn't crash on my after 3 years of heavy playing on a much weaker machine! :-)

So... any thoughts? Anything I can change, monitor, or adjust? Its not the end of the world, but just feels awkward with a brand new machine! Thanks for your help!

Sincerely,
The Zen Crane

P.S. I am running the Steam version of each game if that helps.

That's actually not a high rate of crashing for Oblivion. Most PC players get in the habit of saving after doing anything important, because the Crash-to-Desktop is going to happen periodically. If you're getting a couple hours of play time before a crash, you're actually doing well.
