Skyrim's current state of "game saves"

Post » Mon Dec 05, 2011 3:24 pm

Having a blast playing Skyrim and here's my only complaint:

Having Auto Saves turned on, such as "Save on Rest", "Save on Travel", and "Save on Wait" can result in unintentionally overwriting another game save or character, which has actually become a problem for me.

My roommate uses my PC to Skyrim right now since his GFX card died. Well, I had a level 15 character with auto saving turned on.
He played this afternoon and right away his level 1 overwrote my auto save. Luckily I had manually saved a few levels earlier but it could have been much more worse, and frankly I was kinda pissed.

Well, I'd like to say I think Skyrim needs to have a better Save Game interface. Something like a character selection screen, and below it, or off to the side, a list of game saves for that particular character, whether they are [AUTO] or Manual saves.
Not only would it look good, but it would save the trouble of accidentally overwriting a friend or family's character.

I can only hope this could be a patch or a simple PC mod, but I would assume this might be trouble for the console version as well.

Manual saves, anyone? Oh the good ol' days where we knew how to save our games... :whistling:

Well, it needs profiles, just as Wrye Bash and Wrye Mash did the job for Oblivion and Morrowind, respectively. That's what you are talking about (i.e., each character name has a separate folder for that name/profile).

In the meantime, you'll want to manually backup your save folder after your play sessions as long as your roommate is playing, too. :)

Agreed. :P

Autosaves are so crashes don't hurt you too bad, manual saves are for actually saving your character when you're done playing.

It takes you like 3 seconds to manually save the game. Why don't you?

However, I'd actually like separate folders for every character. It gets quite messy when you play several characters and all of their saves are mixed up on one list.

I understand manually saving, completely.

But I know it would be beneficial to have save games character specific, just in case manually saving crosses your mind and you accidentally overwrote a character you sunk hundreds of hours in.

In the long run I think everyone would like it.

manually being able to name saves instead of a ridiculous number system would be great. It would be much easier to look up a save named "Whitrun, Lvl 14" than it would to remember to load save 57. Not to mention the fact that many like to have multiple different characters. I honestly have no idea how they chose the system they did.

Edit: Because I type like a noob.

Sounds like you need better save management, to be quite honest.

I noticed this as well.

I had some bugs happen in a quest with my first character, "Level 31, Nord" and I could not get the Windhelm House. Being OCD, I deleted all but the most current save of that character, before starting a new one.

The Auto-save that occurs in the beginning of the game after jumping from the wagon overwrote my first character with "Level 1, Nord" even though I hadn't even created a character yet.

Seems fine to me, I use manual saves at important junctures in my game, and quick-saves while traversing the map. Never had a single-problem with it.

Seems to me you want the right thing for all the wrong reasons.
Yes, everyone would benefit from separate folders and nameable saves.
But to solve your problems, you just need to save manually when you quit the game and pay attention where you're clicking. It has nothing to do with the saves system.
