Bug - Magicka regenaration from gear not working in combat

Post » Mon Dec 05, 2011 7:16 pm

Not really sure this is a bug. Sounds intended to me. If your Magicka regenned as much as the bonus for out of combat, itd never run out. Thatd be absurdly OP.

I think I currently have 250% regen and it most certainly does affect regen in combat. Because the base value for regen in combat is so low, lower levels of regen (like 75%) doesn't seem to do much, but it is helping.

It affects regen. From the uesp wiki "Magicka also regenerates more slowly in combat, with a multiplier of 0.33."

Which in my opinion is plain ridiculous; why in azura's name would we need those regen robes if they don't work in combat? Anyway i suppose the only thing a mage could do is probably get the 0 mana cost spells :) that'll probably be quite fun.

intended or not, its forcing mages to go to melee weapons when they run out of magicka.

yea, a mage is NOT underpowered, it just has to be a mage that also fights with a sword, maybe some armour. a shield would help too.

as you can see, im being sarcastic. im playing a mage to cast spells, not cast 2 and then resort to beating them senseless.

if its intened, it was very stupid. starving mages of the one resource they need to survive is basically just making them useless.

sides, even though they give out 50% magicka buffs, that armor couldn't protect you from a strong wind, so its not like its overpowered.

Magicka generation in combat was purposely cut down as opposed to out of combat. This mod fixes that. Enjoy.

Regen is intended to slow in combat, and that includes Stamina and Mana (haven't tested health but would assume so).
Mana regen gear DOES work in combat, its been tested, I've tested it myself.

It takes something like 90 seconds (in combat) to fill a full mana bar at base rate.
If you have a higher mana pool you will regen more mana per second than if you have a small mana pool because it regens 1.1% of your mana pool per second at the base rate. 1.1% of 100 = 1 per second or 1.1% of 500 = 5 per second.

If you are wearing +100% regen your manabar will go from empty to full in combat in 45 seconds (2.2% per second).
+200% regen will fill an empty manabar in 23 seconds (4.4% per second)

Also mana regen pauses while your casting if your maintaining a spell, or simply holding one ready to fire your mana will not regen. This is intended, it represents the concentration required to focus on the spell.

If your having mana issues you need to aproach it from 3 angles.
Reduce your spell costs (obviously) with gear/perks
Increase your mana pool - Because regen is % based you will be regenerating more mana per second if you have a higher pool.
Directly increase mana regen - It DOES work in combat.

If your still having problems, try this potion in combat, It will give you upfront mana and supercharge your regen in combat or out of combat:
Spoiler

Jazbay Graqes + Red Mountain Flower + Firesalts

Curently These potions I'm making at about 60 alchemy + perks =
+70% Mana regen (300 sec)
+56 Magicka pool (60 Sec)
Restore 88 Magicka

This is why you focus on gear that reduces spell cost.

Regen gets taken to some fraction during combat.

Combat regen seems to scale with:
- size of your mana pool (your bar fills up in the same amount of time no matter how much mana you have). If I put on a 30 magika cowl, and I have 300 magika without it, that's 330/300 = 10% more regen.
- +regen. Yes, even during combat. But JUST a mage robe isn't nearly enough because you're still only getting 1/5th of your normal regen.

I'd have to run some tests to be absolutely sure of this, but it seems like what's going on to me.

The one thing to absolutely not neglect is items that reduce your casting cost. When your spells only cost 30% of their normal price, that's when the extra combat regen starts to actually matter.
If you're an enchanter you can have two schools with heavily discounted magika cost.
