Custom Classes and Lore

Post » Mon Dec 05, 2011 8:05 pm

I was wondering if it is acceptable from a role playing point of view to add to TES lore to accommodate your own custom classes?

For example. One of my custom classes is a Valkyrie, here's a build and brief description

Race: Nord (Female always)
Birthsign: Mage
Specialisation: Combat
Favored Attributes: Strength/Intelligence
Major Skills:
  • Athletics
  • Blade
  • Block
  • Destruction
  • Heavy Armour
  • Illusion
  • Restoration

Class Description: According to ancient texts, Valkyire battlemaidens would appear if a Nord Army were losing a battle. Their mere presence was enough to give Nord warriors a much needed boost in morale, and strike fear in the hearts of the opposing forces, be they Elf, Men or Beast. Inspired by their beauty and prowess with a blade, defeated warriors rise against the odds and fight alongside what were once seen as goddesses.

Would this be acceptable, or am I taking liberties?

I see no problem with it, in fact I like it! I haven′t created my own class that detailed and the fact that you are inspired by Nordic folklore is what makes me throw http://images.uesp.net//c/c4/Fishystick.jpg at you :)

I agree. It's your game so you should feel free to tweak the lore however you like. I like to take snips of lore and take them in different directions. For example, my Bosmer has never heard of the Green Pact, as I consider it to be an epic failure of a concept. Rather, we have created our own Bosmeri lore that does not completely short circuit TES, but is much more based upon tree dwelling stewards of the forest - which includes using what they need. We have also developed pretty extensive lore to account for the fact that my character is a vampire slayer - not by profession, but by birth; it is pretty carefully woven into TES lore and we are rather proud of it. I have taken the lore of King Rislav of Skingrad and, from his history, developed a special power that allows my character to recall her horse.

I think your Valkerie concept is wonderful and agree that basing some of it in Nordic culture is great!

Well it isn't lore breaking and really, if there isn't any lore about that it's perfectly fine to add it to your own. Heck, like Acadian said, you can even slightly tweak lore. So yeah, it looks good. And if your character is going to be a Nord Valkyrie that strikes fear in the enemy's heart, remember to teach her lots of rally and demoralize spells. It would also be nice to have a couple companions too so that the rally and demoralize spells aren't useless

My thoughts exactly, Hence Illusion as a major skill.

Thanks for the responses, and for the fishy stick :D

I've posted my builds elsewhere, but my custom race of "Faeries & Angels" includes Valkyries as well as Nymphs and Pixies. All are related races with similar abilities, but some slight variation in specific stats. Yes, the Valkyrie are legends of Nordic lore. The Nymphs and Pixies are legends related to Breton and Elvish lore. All the races have female leaders and the females are generally more powerful than the males, albeit not necessarily in the physical stats. :P

It may be interesting to see if Beth includes Valkyries in Skyrim in some form.

Is there a place where I can read about your bosmeri lore? Huge bosmer fanatic, but I am not a huge fan of the green pact either.

I fear it is sprinkled throughout the massive saga that is Buffy's Journal (linked in my sig).

Basically, Buffy was trained in the old ways by Daenlin. She ate the heart of the first deer she successfully killed. That was a ceremony associated with her first successful hunt. It does not apply to her humanoid foes nor does it imply cannibalism.

She kneels and thanks the spirit of the animals she kills for food and wishes their spirit safe journey until they return to Nirn. She will not dishonor a prey animal by killing it unless she intends to fully utilize it. She will ensure that all the meat is used by her or others. The magical energy of the animal is used to recharge her bow. In the case of a deer, the doe or buckskin is fashioned into the greaves, boots, loincloths or robes that she wears. She will often hunt rabbit if it is just for her as she will not waste a boar or deer to feed her alone.

Regarding plant life, she is a responsible steward of the forest. She uses what she needs, but no more.

In our game, Bosmer are somewhat like any one of several tribes of American Indians regarding their relationship with the forest.

My character is Cyrodiil born, but her mother was Valenwood born. There is much she will not learn until she someday visits her mother's tribe in the treetops of northern Valenwood, such as breeding considerations, totems and life in the treetops. Life in Valenwood is quite a bit more tribal and shaman based than for Bosmer in Cyrodiil. I fear however, I have taken enough space here though. :)
