Hey, were too lazy to add custom icons!

Post » Tue Dec 06, 2011 10:36 am

It's a question about usability, I don't want to run around in a city looking for signs nor hover like a maniac, let's remove the local map altogether and you can have your search fest. And yet again, please redirect me to any RPG game that doesen't have distinct icons in towns, betsheda has clearly missed this.

Baldur's Gate, Planescape: Torment, Icewind Dale, Neverwinter Nights... Shall I continue?

i always thought those icons were just to show you where a cell transition was, not really to navigate a town. i find it is much easier to just run around looking at signposts and getting a feel for where everything is through multiple visits than relying on the map. the local map has always kind of svcked in TES games... again, its my belief its just there to show you which doors have a loading screen, not really for finding specific shops.

The purpose was to make you explore. There are NPCs along the way who will give you quests, and interesting dialogue, so going directly to a place would be missing out on a ton of content. It makes sense to have to wander a town to find something. Even in real life with a detailed map that has different icons, you still are forced to go around looking, maybe even ask questions. Though I wouldn't call you stupid or lazy if that's how you prefer to play it, lol. Just wait for a mod, someone else I'm sure shares your opinion and will make one later on. No big deal, and certainly not game breaking. It's not that they were lazy, it's that you're supposed to explore to find all the content.

It'd be enough if inns and different types of shops had their own symbol.

Yea, this is really enough; most of the time we dont even care about houses unless we feel like plundering some loot out of them. Shops should have a different sign..

Yes, more handholding is what this game needs! God forbid you actually explore the city and learn its layout.

It would be nice to have a mod for this. In fact, it would be nice to have a mod where all the text was just there without me having to mouse over everything individually, something which I find boring and annoying.

Lol the insults from the weak minded are hilarious.

You all do know that little things are what makes a game stand out, the nice little touches that you hardly notice.
Different icons are such a thing, they are just that little extra that adds to functionality.
So many today just like to throw around terms like entitlement, or bash someone as being petty.

There is nothing wrong in wanting polish on a game, that polish is what makes a great long lasting game vs just another hack and slash with updated graphics.

Although I have had no problems locating anything, I think I understand where the OP is coming from. In a game this grand, with so much time and effort put into it by Beth, it seems like this would have been an easy "Oh, lets make the symbols on the maps distinct for different types of buildings" by the devs. I mean, on the world map the major cities are distinguished from the smaller cities/villages, and there are distinct symbols on the world map for crypts, caves, dragon lairs, tower stones, etc. So why could they not have distinct symbols for the local maps, distinguishing between houses, inns, shops, etc.? Again, I am not bashing what they did, I have had no issues, but I feel the OP is right in saying this would have been a simple change that would have brought the game one step closer to achieving gaming perfection. After all, it is often the little things (IMO) that make a game great or just good.

God forbid you have to use such a huge amount of effort to locate something.

My thoughts.

Exactly, we are not saying the game is bad/broken, but polish on a game like this is what will set it apart from other games, potentially for years to come.

You are being lazy. Get over it. Back in my day, we didn't even have keyholes! We just had little squares, and no one ever told you were anything was, except for in terms of north, south, east, west or left and right. And they usual got it wrong!
