Dagoth "Ur" - translated

Post » Mon Dec 05, 2011 10:48 pm

Over the Easter weekend, I went with my parents to an ethnic Hungarian church, and one of the stained glass windows showed the following words: Jezusz "Ur", with double dots over the "U". I asked about the meaning of the word, and was told that "Ur", placed after a name, meant about the same as "Lord" before a name in English. So, Lord Dagoth would be Dagoth Ur in Hungarian....

Isn't Ur also German for 'Original'?

Not as much "Original" as "Really, really, really old" At least in Swedish.

Im glad you found out this out for yourself. If only I had moments like this. :P

One must remember that Dagoth Ur's name was not always what it was.

He used to go by Voryn Dagoth, until he emerged as the leader of house dagoth, gaining the title Lord Voryn Dagoth, or essentially Dagoth Ur. :)

EDIT: We could potentially move this to the lore section.

I thought it was "Dagoth #1" and the other significant Dagoths were numbered in line.

Implying that their names are also Dunmerish for numbers or some sort of sequence?

In that context it would be "The First Dagoth" or Ur Dagoth. The... Progenitor? Of all Dagoths.

Well you could think of it like in Spanish when you describe something. In Spanish, you say the dog brown, instead of the brown dog.

From "De Vermis Misteriis":
...
Ur ? city in occult sense, the object situated in some space and having limits (Borders/Walls) and Gates.

There is also Ur-dra (Nocturnal) and Ur-Tower (Adamantine Tower) in TES theology.

Adamantine Tower was the first tower, which is how I thought "Dagoth Ur" Refers to "First Dagoth" or "Dagoth #1"

Hmm, it's possible. But Adamantine Tower reffered as "Zero Stone"; maybe "Ur" means something like "primordial" instead of numeral "first"?

I haven't ruled that out either. I like it.

Mind if I answer your question with another question? What does Redoran, Hlaalu, Telvanni, and Dres mean?

Well if we go with the basic idea presented in http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/855475-when-dead-gods-dream/ that Dagoth Ur is dreaming perhaps then the name Dagoth comes from Conan's http://moa.dracandros.com/Dagoth_(Conan_Films).

Telvanni literally means "Tower of Wing Feathers". But "Wing Feathers" is a poetic term and I do not know what it means. The other terms I do not know what I mean.

And Dagoth, the Dreaming god's name comes from Dagon, the Babylonian god of fertility.

I just assumed Ur was a reference to the human city.
