Keep getting my butt kicked...

Well, the title says it all I guess. So far I think one of my main issues is that I'm playing the game really slowly, I try to avoid exploring different area's unless a quest takes me there. So far I barely touched the main quest and I decided to join the companions. I think I explored maybe 10-20% of the map so far from winterhold to whiterun and riften so that's basically most of the eastern regions of the map. I'm pretty far in the companions guild quests a few quests back I joined the inner circle, but I still keep on getting my ass kicked. Sometimes, actually most of the times, I find it hard fighting against multiple enemies at the same time. From the start I decided to build a mage character however I quickly found out that being a mage is actually worse than a warrior lol. Right now I'm a level 11 [is that bad?] and quests keep on getting harder however I feel like my character doesn't grow equally with the difficulty of this game. I'm specialized mostly in two handed swords and super specialized in restoration magic lol. I feel like not exploring new regions in the game doesn't really allow me to collect new and better armor/weapons however I hate to explore all the different regions too fast I hate to spoil surprises in such an early stage. I've only been playing this game for 26 hours now, so please help I'm so lost ;)!

Dificulty in this game can at times be whack, as someone who leveled to 44 before touching the main quest I can say shouts help... a LOT. A companion helps a lot too on certain crazy ass fights, and at least one crafting skill is pretty much essential in this game.

Would be easier to help you if you can be a bit more specific  if you have trouble against multiple enemies, try to bring a follower with you could save you alot of headache. There are some monsters such as trolls/giants are just too hard for early equipments, are you running to them often?

My style of play sounds very similar to yours and I'm also taking it slow. I'm still on the east side of the map and I have Lydia with me. I've joined the College of Winterhold too. Lydia took me into an area the other day that was filled with creatures and I kept dying. We did finally make it through using a lot of different tactics. I'd been taking Magicka most when I leveled up so I took a look at my Health level and decided to take it more. I've taken it the last few times and things have improved. Are you getting your Health level up high enough? :) Watch the skies.

Well playing this game depend on how smart you are and what difficulty it is. Default levels seem to be for new players, while expert more balance and on master, well prepared to die alot there. Also depend on your skills and tactics. Dont try to get surrounded by enemies, that the worst case ever and the traps through out the realm is tricky too. Take your time and study the places first and you dont have to complete the quests if you are not happy with it.

Even companions don't really help that often. I only found Farkas a little helpful on some of the quests but I can't always take him with me. Lydia joins me most of the time even though she's annoying the hell out of me from time to time however I feel like she's less helpful then Farkas. Also I find it funny that whenever I used certain spells as a mage I felt like they did little damage to my enemies, however when enemies use spells I feel like they are far more effective? So far when it comes to crafting I've been looking into enchanting and alchemy more then I ever did in tes games lol. Alchemy really helps creating potions that get me through a battle however I would hate to rely on potions for the rest of my life?

Anything, mostly multiple enemies but also creatures like trolls, or sabretooth tigers. Also I found myself get kicked by these dwemer spiders. Mostly spiders in general are easy to kill, wolves and that sort of low level enemies are not even a threat. I also find it somewhat funny that I find it easier to kill a dragon than most of the "larger" creatures ingame.

Yeah maybe I should focus on that a bit more, so far I've been trying to balance things out a bit, I think they are all around 140/150 right now but maybe it's easier to focus on one thing for now which is health.

You have to vary your tactics a bit. Try different spells. Be sure to put some points into health when you level too and armor wouldnt be a bad idea. Certain mage spells like illusion and conjurgation are very powerful too. Invest in those

I'm not an expert mage but I can kill frost trolls

You're a mage, but you specialise in 2h and restoration? o.O That....sounds like a warrior...
And wouldnt you have to sheath your 2h weapon to heal? Kinda funny specialisation you've got there.

Best thing to do is always carry food, cook everytime you get the chance, save every ingredient and bit of food you get, make potions, buy every healing potion possible, and most importantly: save level-ups for when your health is nearly entirely gone and you're in the middle of combat. Also, bring along a companion at all times. If you're a stealth character you're probably SOL. But yeah, I die a [censored] load, but I'm also playing on the Master difficulty and have been since day 1.
