Are we going to run out of TES games?

Post » Tue Dec 06, 2011 6:12 am

I'm not a lore-junkie when it comes to The Elder Scrolls games although I do partake somewhat rationally in the occasional read.

There's only so many provinces in all of Nirn, am I right? They've done Morrowind, Cyrodil and now Skyrim; I believe Daggerfall was set in High Rock, so are we eventually (whenever that may be) going to witness the end of a thoroughly enjoyed series of games?

I looked at how all the Harry Potter fans reacted to "the end" of the books and movies somewhat sceptically and disinterested but even thinking of the end of TES gives me shivers and an empty feeling.

Will future games explore other continents and their provinces? Akaviir looks interesting to explore...

They've got Summerset, Valenwood, Hammerfell (only part was shown in Daggerfall and Redguard), High Rock (again, not all of High Rock was explored), Elswyre, Argonia and then there is whats left of Yokuda and eventaully Akivir, though I pray to God to never see Akavir. All of Nirn would be cool, but I don't expect to be alive when that comes around, any crud scaled model of the world just wont due.

We still have four provinces left (Summerset Isle, Valenwood, Elsweyr, and Black Marsh). At the rate we're going, we'll be fine for about another twenty years.

There's no reason why they couldn't revisit more areas that were in Arena and Daggerfall, like they've already done for Skyrim, since most of it was procedurally generated anyway. There's even room for another Morrowind game - we only got to explore the island of Vvardenfell, aside from Tribunal none of the mainland was covered.

Not to mention, even when they run out of regions they could revisit the realms they have already covered, simply in different time. Or perhaps re-release MW with improved graphics, animations, and voice acting. I have never played it since I don't have a PC, but would love to.

Why would anyone want a game with all of them combined after we've had a game for each province?

I'd like to see a game set somewhere other than Tamriel, Bethesda could give us a big 'end of the world' storyline and then do the rest of the series somewhere else.

It would be cool to see Morrowind post-Red Year. Even revisiting Vvardenfell would end up being drastically different.

We've already got a big "End of the World" scenario, in fact, we've had three in a row so far. Personally, I hate the cliche end of the world crap where your the only one who can save it. Other places never intrigued me, I don't like beast races, and thats all the popular destinations like Akivir has to offer.

I was thinking more along the lines of an end of the world scenario where the world actually ends. A post-apocalyptic TES could be pretty fun.

Commercially, there's no reason to stop TES, just look at the preorder numbers - over a million, not including steam!

But the big problem will be the core team behind the games - 10 years now a lot of them have been working on the series.
Even knowing that you're making something as awesome as TES won't be enough to keep them there forever - they'll want to move on.

Yes! I think it would be very cool to see, maybe in another 400 years, the rebirth of Vvardenfell.

Yeah, and imagine playing a game the size of Oblivion about 20 times, that is how long it would take to finish all of Nirn. But it would take forever to make, though.

Also, taking a boat to the island of Vvardenfell to see whats left to do and explore it after the destruction.

AS to the OP: theres plenty of games that can be made for TES. Even before Skyrim was announced I wanted Black Marsh/Argonia, however you call it, thats what I wanted. The lore and stories and the way that in game characters speaking of how inhospitable Black Marsh is, it would be an awesome province to go to. Im not too concerned about running out of TES. As long as the Devs take the time, we probably wont run out for a VERY long time

There are lots of game ideas that they could do, for example a RPG\strategy game. It wouldn't be kinda exactly TES, but it would be still be set in the TES Universe, and there are still lots of contintents and stuff they haven't explored yet.

Well once the series is done I could see it turning into a big MMO I guess with occasional single player games spouted out in the form of action games and traditional open world RPG games that add to the lore even further. That would be the only MMO I will ever play. Hopefully that is not for years and years. I picture it like the Star Wars series in some respects.

Also there is literally nothing stopping them from revisiting other places. Hell they have already done all of them in Arena and there was half a province in Morrowind and two parts of a province in Daggerfell. Who says they need to do a whole province? I would not mind a Summerset Pyandonea combo. Pyandonea is where the Maormer live btw.

If they ever stopped the main series for whatever reason, main overarching story arc having run its course being one of them for instance. I could see them reviving the Elder Scrolls Legends and Adventures franchises and continuing those. That would be great. I would love to see an action game taking place in the TES universe. I would prefer the open world RPGs though.

Well lets look at it realistically. It has been 5 years from Oblivion to Skyrim because they were making Fallout 3 in-between. If we assume they keep up this pattern, and the pattern of one province per game than we can conclude that the series will go on for 25 more years before they "run out". 30 if you include Morrowind because Vvardenfell has been destroyed, and the mainland wasn't visited so I see no reason not to do a game there.

I think if we are ever to visit any other continents on Nirn it should be just in a quest format, and not an entire game on the continent. I just don't think it would fit the Elder Scrolls feel very well. Especially because it wouldn't be likely to play as one of the 9 traditional races (they wouldn't last a minute on their own in a place like Akavir).

They can always just revisit provinces.

Think about this:

Why not? They could set it a 1000 years in the future after a great war or cataclysm and have some cities be in ruins... the Imperial City could be flooded and infested with Argonians and others could have expanded. Heck they could take some small town or village and it be a big city in teh future. The island of Morrowind could be sunk like Atlantis and new cities could have come to life. They could have.. there's so many possibilities with new factions and political boundries could be changed and such.
