Yup it was a bug. I started a new character and stuff is properly labelled as 'steal'

Exactly as was said on the first page..

by one person very vaguely. Then someone else said it might be a bug, and I was able to confirm that yes, it is a bug.

Stop being so weird about this man. I'm sorry this discussion thread wasn't managed to the brim with excellent documentation or whatever. Relax

Also, unlike in oblivion and fallout, in this game you're allowed to 'pick up' (hold E) and toss 'red' items around. You can toss them into a corner and then steal them where the owner can't see you.

You could do this is Fallout 3.

I don't remember being able to do that...

I guess I never tried, thinking it would be the same as Oblivion.

Only reason I did it in Skyrim is because in one interview Todd said you could. :P

Then again, he did also say that food on tables in an inn would be free for all; but they aren't. :/

I wouldn't be surprised if everything (but a couple expensive potions) in Arcadia's store become free again after you bring her some frost salts or whatever from the Yarl's wizard.
I don't think it's a bug, it's how friendship works but most of the time it doesn't make sense.
And on the other side, you can't eat the piece of bread next to the bed you've rent. Well until you help them with a trivial quest, or maybe selling some firewood (sometimes their own wood) is enough to please them.

Then you can harvest the whole inn and sell them back their own wine.

Why be a thief?

Because the good stuff isn't just lying around free for the taking or using an exploit to get to (an exploit that'll probably get patched). Some quests also give better optional rewards for sneaking and pickpocketing.

Hardly any items in the game are marked in RED. I can walk into the alchemy shop in the first city and legally take all of the ingredients on display (so long as its not worth more than 100 gold), and the shopowner wont care.

That's just an example.

Also, unlike in oblivion and fallout, in this game you're allowed to 'pick up' (hold E) and toss 'red' items around. You can toss them into a corner and then steal them where the owner can't see you.

They explicitly disallowed this in oblivion because it broke immersion and made thieving REALLY easy.
Picking up an owned item was stealing. In skyrim, the citizens don't care if you pick up their glass sword and carry it to a different room, only to steal it in privacy.

So what's the point of being a thief if you're allowed to take most of the stuff in the game without anyone caring?
There's no risk and it kill immersion and RP.

edit: Yup it was a bug. I started a new character and stuff is properly labelled as 'steal'

The game clearly states that if someone likes you, they will share with you. Steal from people you hate/that hate you instead of the people who don't mind sharing.

Even the one in whiterun?
Bueller?

I'm curious how many times I have to list the location of the place in the first example.

You might want to listen to others too. You keep saying the game doesnt let you steal because everyone just gives everything away and people keep telling you its not like that all over.

Pretty sure this kind of thing happens because of this.

It should probably be changed though, so stuff in the shop just does not suddenly become yours for the taking, especially since npcs that like you seem to already just come up and give you random gifts anyway.

Because you should be able to take ALL items in the game, not just most. Who do they think they are? Silly NPCs and their OWNERSHIP and their false ECONOMY.
