Morrowind Jack of All Trades

Post » Thu Sep 24, 2009 5:30 pm

This weekend, i will (finally, thank god :D ) be purchasing my new copy of morrowind. For my character, I'd like to play a jack of all trades character. Could anyone suggest a good build? Race, skills, birthsign etc. and a good strategy/way to play this character? Thank you :)

(Oh: And if you're going to suggest a build for me, please include mysticism) :) thank you

Why do you want Mysticism? It's been a while, I forget what's there that is so important. :)

Well a Dunmer (Dark Elf) is a good place to start for a Jack of All Trades. Thing is, what do you want to do? Are you more of a warrior? With axe or swords? Are you more of a Thief or Mage? What is your
play style? Far combat with Bows and Cross bows or spears, or perchance with fire balls, ice balls etc? What about, up in your face combat with swords and axes?

Will you use lots of magic or rely on trinkets like rings and amulets? Are you a cook? How about magika is anthema for you? If you look at the top of the forum, I believe there is thread about characters.
Did you try looking there and see what they have?

With so little information it's hard. I believe a Dark Elf, with Mage as a sign to give you more magika while no negatives is a good place to start. Sword or Axe as a major depending on what you want.
Archery (or what ever it's called) for long range combat if you like, and Restoration, Destruction and Illusion as majors as well. Conjeurer as well if you want to cast your own weapons. I forget what the
School is called for making your magical trinkets and weapons. You may want that as well but that could be a minor.

You may also want Lockpicking and stealth as well as minors, but I tend to use magic if I am deficient in those schools sometimes.

Hope this helps.

It's pretty hard not to have your character become something of a "jack of all trades" in this game, unless you concentrate heavily in one area.

Imperials and Dunmer are both pretty versatile in this regard, and either one would be a good start for a "non-specialist". Both are decent, but not specatcular, in combat, both have adequate but not remarkable thieving abilities, and either can be good at magic, but gets no huge bonus at it.

Redguard, the Lady, endurance and luck, combat
Majors/Minors: Short blade, block, heavy armor, marksman and athletics/Alchemy, enchant, mysticism, armorer and speech craft.

If you max these skills and get a 35 in Sneak and Unarmored, you can rise to the top of all joinable Faction/Guilds (Cult, Temple, Legion, Fighter/Thief/Mage guild and Morag Tong) or Great Houses (you need one more magic skill at 35 for Telvanni). That’s what I did and it was lots of fun.

if you intend to cast a lot of spells, try The Atronach. twice as much magic and 50% spell absorption. spell points in morrowind don't regenerate on the own. and you can't always rest to replace them. so it is wise to carry potions that replace spell points.

Atronach is also very good in Morrowind because you can get all your Magicka back at an Almsivi or Imperial Cult shrine, only with the Atronach sign. With Almsivi Intervention/Divine Intervention and Mark & Recall, you can teleport out, recharge Magicka, and teleport back.

i have never done it, because i always recharged my atronach via spells from summons, but technically, since recharging via shrines only takes a second, one could get spell absorb from a spell or item and, if at 100%, it would even be better than with atronach.

I recharge alot at the shrines as well. I hardly ever sleep because being Antronach, you don't regenerate magika anyways. I magic of restore Stamina. This way I say it's the magic that
keeps me awake all the time so I don't have to sleep. :)

I chose mysticism because of mark and recall, very useful. I'm mostly a stealthy/magic kind of guy. I can't stand pure warriors anymore, but I like combinations like battlemages. :)

Spell absorb is also mysticism, so to recharge mana at shrines, w/o atronach youll need high level mysticism. Also almsivi and divine teleports. And soul trap. The problem here is these all are plain utility skills, making mysticism dead boring. Certainly the opposite of what its name implies.

hi there,

i always spend some time creating a new character, they're mostly jacks of all trades (always dark elves by the way).
what i came up with for my current playthrough is this:

MAJOR

  • speechcraft
  • long blade
  • block
  • mysticism
  • athletics

MINOR

  • security
  • marksman
  • light armor
  • restoration
  • acrobatics

specialization is stealth.
what bugs me a bit about it is that i did not include sneak this time, as it's one of the coolest skills in my opinion.
so, this character can fight with a sword or switch to throwing stars or a bow, cast buffs and debuffs with mysticism and restoration and, well... influence people and break in their houses :)

don't understand it as a definite suggestion, i just wanted to post my thoughts about it.
i should add that i run morrowind pretty heavily modded with BTB's game improvements, talrivian's state-based hitpoint calculation and a (large!) number of own tweaks, including gouverning attributes for some skills (mostly oblivion-style and in my opinion still balanced) and 15 instead of 10 major/minor increases towards levelup (this scales the insane max level of 70-80 down to around 50), while making it easier to obtain the x5-multiplier (i only need 7 skill-ups for it; with 15 skill increases towards levelup, you can, with minor skills counted in, easily reach a x5-multiplier in two attributes, while increasing luck every level (which only increases by 1)).

never tried galsia's mod, but with the changes above i'm not really micromanaging my levelups anymore, so i probably never will try it out :) (as i think about it, maybe i could release a small mod with these changes some time).

if you have the patience, you could just make your own adjustments with the construction set (be warned though, it's incredibly addictive :) )

so, these are just my thoughts.
try stuff out and keep the stuff that makes your game more fun! ;)

Well, all I can say is Atronach birthsign is great. Although resting does not replenish magicka when using that birthsign, you will gladly join in on a fight with mages :)

As said, it′s hard not to be a JOAT in this game unless you focus on specific things so you will have little worries there.

Good luck!
