Or should I just continue playing Oblivion and Morrowind with mods?

Daggerfall is free, so why not? If one already play a heck load of hours on Morrowind/Oblivion, I think its time to try out Daggerfall.

One can use an installer to start the game right away: http://theelderscrolls.wiwiland.net/?title=Daggerfall_:_DaggerfallSetup_EN

I wouldn't waste your time. I tried it a while back out of nostalgia, and I have to say that it hasn't aged well, both in terms of graphics and design.

I entirely disagree with Dogar. It still is an awesome game, with certain gameplay aspects much more complex and fun than the newer games.

Good to hear that. This sure makes it more tempting for me.

Short answer: Yes.

Daggerfall is more about dungeon delving than the world-exploration of the later games, and the graphics can be a little rough on modern eyes, but the atmosphere is as good as anything Bethesda has done since, and the character creation is better. You'll find a lot of gameplay elements that were later modded into Morrowind and Oblivion already in place in Daggerfall, though to be fair to the later games none of the features Daggerfall promised ever worked quite right :).

As others have said, it's free, so why not? If you can't get into it, at least you'll get a brief history lesson about where the series came from.

I'm also playing Daggerfall for the first time, and it's a very fun game! The controls took me a little while to get used to, and configured to my liking. I really like the aesthetics of the game, even though they're not technically the best graphics. I think the combat system is neat, and unique. When I first went into an inn, I went into one of the rooms and found a box belonging to someone else. I close the door, went into stealth mode, crouched down, and opened the box to find a crappy pair of boots. I left the boots in the box, and immediately I hear three guard downstairs yelling "Halt, halt, halt!". The guard system is definitely worse than Oblivion, but the court system is cool, and I got away with theft...kinda.

Save when you first start your game, save often, and remember to rest.

I've never tried playing an old game that I didn't own during its era. So, while I love Daggerfall, I honestly couldn't tell you how much I would love it if I hadn't already formed a connection with it in the past. I hope you enjoy it.

Good advice, and I am happy that you are a new player and you enjoy the game. That means there is hope that I will enjoy the game too :D

I played Daggerfall when I finished Oblivion and Morrowind for like the 10th time each.
I loved it. I tried Arena but it was just too old for me. Daggerfall on the other hand is still an awesome game. It's actually the one where the player is the most free.

Definitely. It's a great game, but coming from Oblivion and Morrowind, it's 100000% harder (at least it was for me). Ultra realistic in a lot of ways the later games weren't: almost any disease will kill you in time if you don't treat it, fatigue only regenerates with spells or sleep and if it runs out in a hostile location you're screwed, incredibly complex and arduous dungeon crawls...but it was all worth it. When i finally beat the main quest the first time, I actually felt like I accomplished something simply by surviving. And with some of the modded content that's still around adds some more quests and stuff to add even more options. Once you get in, it's pretty addicting, at least it was for me, despite the old graphics and repetitive encounters.

I too am new to daggerfall, I'm loving it. One thing that got me into the game is this:

"Bethesda claims that the scale of the game is equal to twice the size of Great Britain:[1] around 487,000 square kilometers. The game world features over 15,000 towns, cities, villages, and dungeons for the player's character to explore."

That's amazing, straight from the wiki.

It's randomly generated though, Betrayal at Krondor is another good retro fantasy game

Yeah but there's something about its vastness that is extraordinary to me. It may be randomly generated on some level but, that's alot of content to experience, regardless. I like the idea of randomly generated terrain. Gives replayability to me.

And each region is different in its own way, even if it's just slight differences in architecture or peasant appearance. One of my most enjoyable experiences was exploring the "out-of-the-way" regions that were far from actually being involved in the main story, but still just as substantial as any other regions.

I realize that this game is free, but at higher levels, does this game become stupidly easy like in Morrowind?

I can't speak for peeps who didn't take a restriction on armor, but I've gotten to the point where my char is a glass cannon, capable of felling any opponent by sword, or spell (specifically, shalidor's mirror), but can be killed by anyone that get's too close or hits me with an arrow too many times before I can do something about it.
