GECK load problem : Fallout: New Vegas

Have been playing FONV some time and decided to try the GECK. Read through the wiki post on loading and it says I should load both FONV and the corresponding GECK in other than the Program files/Program files (x86) folder/directory.

Went to reinstall in other than Program files/Program files (x86) folder/directory and steam says it can't validate 1 file, it will reacquire it. Then nothing happens (My opinion, STEAM STINKS).

Questions:
1. Do I have to have Steam/could I load the game without it?
2. Why do I need to install in other than Program files (x86) folder/directory? I read what the wiki says but it seems I could leave it there as long as I always run GECK as an Administrator.
3. Can I run GECK as an administrator and skip this?
4. If I must uninstall and reinstall the whole mess all over in a different directory, can I also move my saved games? If so how? (Already have over 400 hours of play invested...)
5. When I tried ignoring the note on installing in a different folder/directory and went ahead with the install in Program files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\fallout new vegas, it would not load saying a different dll (than the one mentioned in the instructions) that is supposed to be missing and it stops. Thanks in advance.

1. Yes/No.
2. Windows 7 64-bit has a nasty habit of not giving programs the proper disk/OS access whenever they're installed to that folder, which is why the Wiki recommends installing to another folder.
3. You can try. I would recommend running it as an admin either way.
4. Yes. Just copy them to a temporary folder and uninstall the game. After it's reinstalled, just move the saves over to the new save folder.
5. See #2. Installing it into a different folder should fix that problem. Also, make sure the GECK and its dll file are in the same folder as falloutnv.exe. I have NV loaded here with no problems: E:\Games\Steam\SteamApps\common\fallout new vegas

You shouldn't even need to uninstall/reinstall Steam. Just grab the entire Steam folder and move it to where you want its new location to be, then change any shortcuts you have to steam.exe to point to it at its new location. When you run steam.exe, it figures out where it is and works from there.

Your saves are located in Documents\My Games\FalloutNV\Saves if you want to back them up.

Apparently I can't figure out how to properly use this forum much less use the GECK. I kept getting errors trying to reply to Jac only to find its been posting everything I write redundantly. Your solution of just moving the whole steam folder sounds good, simple yet elegant. Will give that a shot. Thanks for the help!
