Things to watch out for/things to not do on first playthroug

Post » Tue Dec 06, 2011 8:40 pm

Can you guys offer any advice on things to make sure I don't miss/don't do on my first playthrough? Just like 3, It would seem New Vegas is one of those games that you can easily miss something/do something bad and end up paying for it the rest of your playthrough (Such as missing the bobblehead in the vault in 3)

Is there any missable things you guys have found so far?

I've heard that in a certain quest, if I choose to help criminals over a certain man it will be near impossible to find doctors. This is the sort of thing I want to be made aware of before playing through the game the first time so I don't stuff up my first character.

If you guys can think of anything like what I'm talking about and can explain it to me WITHOUT ANY SPOILERS(Unless they are EXTREMELY minor.. I'm sure you guys know the difference) I would greatly appreciate it!

I don't know if it's any use cause i haven't tried the weapon but if you take the Wild Wasteland trait at character creation, you wont be able to get the unique gauss rifle later in game.

Don't assume everyone someone says is a bad guy actually is - EVEN if that "bad guy" is shooting at you and hostile. Often, amends can still be made and other sides heard.

Don't assume everyone that shows up as friendly on your radar or compass actually is. NPCs love to act innocent and shoot you in the back when you turn around, and the game delights in showing figures in the distance as friendly, only for them to be revealed to be very hostile when you approach.

Don't be afraid to use chems to help yourself in combat. They aren't nearly as addictive as in FO3, and combat is hard enough that they actually make a big difference.

Pick three core skills and focus on them. Most players won't be able to max more than 5-6 skills in a single playthrough, and you often won't max your starting tagged skills until level 14-15.

Never assume any enemy is a push-over, because few are, and even those that are push-overs are lethal in packs or groups.

There is no level scaling in the world anymore, so plan ahead and explore carefully and don't be afraid to run. Often there are warning signs you are about to step into the frying pan. Don't think these signs are for "flavor" or decoration. They are all warning you of actual dangers.

Don't feel compelled to tag Survival just because you are playing hardcoe Mode - it is useful, but food and drink are abundant enough that it isn't necessary by any means.

Be careful about who you make enemies of - everyone has allies and territories, etc. and consequences range from surprising to deadly.

Always carry an outfit from your enemy faction with you to disguise yourself if need be.

Have fun.

Nightkin hurt like hell. Have a really strong weapon on you at all times for when you fight these things. Their invisability doesn't help either.
