Just made a topic similar to this but it got ignored... mine was more on the concern about killing your companion dog, hopefully someone will make a mod that let's us not harm our companions with our attacks ( since they can't harm you as well, i don't see the problem with it).

Me too. I dont like the current system

If they recieve a certain amount of damage they should be incapacited a certain amount of time and then recover. If they recieve a massive amount of damage then they should die and respawn back where you originally hired them. This way they arent gone forever and you still have a penalty

Like I said, I ain't even mad. It bothered me at first, but now that I think about it, they got in the way of my arrows, it's their fault. Lydia dying was my fault, though. I was kiting a few guys out of a Fort and I didn't notice Lydia ran in and started fighting. By the time I was finished with the two guys I was taking care of, I noticed another one. Pulled back my arrow, from quite a good distance too and shot her right in the face. Killed her. I laughed. Added a bit of immersion to the game if you ask me. And then I looted her. Good times.

My mage companion, dog and myself were just killing a bear. The dog is right next to me fighting the bear. The mage unleashes some aoe fireball and my friggin dog falls over dead again. He didn`t even go into defeated state just fell the hell over all stiff and stinkin.

I won't let Lydia die unless it's in some epic manner. Friendly fire or me or her just being stupid will cause a reload.

Once i was trying to heal Lydia with healing hands but i only had the spell equipped in one hand. Clicked the wrong button and killed L'id with a punch. Reload.
Plus I've killed her lots with shouts.

The thing is they tend to get near you when your attacking or when you do a power attack (mainly the dual wielding power attack while standing) tends to hit stuff behind your ennemie too... i love dogs whenever i accidently killed mine i felt horrible and quick loaded before that happened.

So if your companion gets killed he WILL appear back wher I hired hime eventually??? If so, I need to remember where I hired him because I cant get another follower or hire anyone else because it keeps telling me I have someone already. Please help me out.

I've lost about half a dozen now.

I'm actually not sure how many exactly because I've lost count. #1 cause of death is fireballs.

This last one apparently got tired of me hitting him with stray spells/shouts and just started attacking me so I had to put him down =/

As far as I know they don't come back unless you're on PC and use console commands. Don't quote me on that, though.

I don't think so. I think your followers can only get killed if you kill them by hitting them directly or if they die from damage from one of your area-of-effect spells, but then they stay dead.

I'm playing a mage and I've killed Lydia quite a few times by accident. It's especially annoying when my atronach blows up and kills her. I would use a mod that makes them invulnerable too, for me it's just an annoyance and I reload. Also it's really annoying when my atronach or lydia aggro my horse and kill it. That seems to happen a lot, they still attack it if I get on and ride it!

While it's realistic that companions can die, and there is a sense of danger there, the execution is annoying. I lost my freaking WIFE in one of the Dwemer ruins. I'd much prefer them to be essential and just "knocked out" so the fight becomes harder, but I don't bear a permanent penalty for my companion's incompetence.
