Thalmor in Skyrim

Post » Tue Dec 06, 2011 11:23 pm

Ok, when I first started to read about them on the boards the general opinion was the Thalmor are trying to eradicate mankind.

But after going through the entire game I haven't found any intention of this, it seems quite clear they want to dominate mankind... much the way they already rule over their current territories. But I didn't read or hear anything that made me think genocide was on the table.

Did I just miss it somewhere?

It wouldn't be politically sound to make it known that they wish the omniside of the entire world and to unmake the world. Alot of the info was droped off in the Lore Forum by Mike Kirkbride (a former dev) including one piece of information which outlined the Thalmors overall plan as well as the line "To kill man is to reach Heaven". Its not opinion, its fact. Their religious extremists who's eventual goal is to return the Mer back to their original state before the dawn, conquest however is just one of the ways they are going about suppressing and killing man (and all the other races of Tamriel.)

To kill Man is to reach Heaven, from where we came before the Doom Drum's iniquity. When we accomplish this, we can escape the mockery and long shame of the Material Prison.

To achieve this goal, we must:

1) Erase the Upstart Talos from the mythic. His presence fortifies the Wheel of the Convention, and binds our souls to this plane.

2) Remove Man not just from the world, but from the Pattern of Possibility, so that the very idea of them can be forgotten and thereby never again repeated.

3) With Talos and the Sons of Talos removed, the Dragon will become ours to unbind. The world of mortals will be over. The Dragon will uncoil his hold on the stagnancy of linear time and move as Free Serpent again, moving through the Aether without measure or burden, spilling time along the innumerable roads we once travelled. And with that we will regain the mantle of the imperishable spirit.

Their religious extremists who's eventual goal is to have everyone reincarnate into "pure" Altmer and then return the Mer everyone back to their original state before the dawn, conquest however is just one of the ways they are going about suppressing and killing man (and all the other races of Tamriel.)
Fixed that for you.
I think the racism card is overplayed, even by Bethesda (but it's so easy and everybody is doing it). This is more a conflict of philosophies than one of race. Men are simply the biggest obstacle to their idea of paradise.

Except the Altmer philosophy is and always has been one of racial superiority. Overplayed or not, their still racial supremacists and even look down upon their fellow mer and throw them in with scum like men. Issue is their idea of paradise means the death of everyone else and opportunity of obtaining something greater than their original state.

Is there any race in Tamriel that doesn't look down on every other one? All the Altmer add to the mix are their long ancestry and the golden skin. And their recent success, I guess.

The death of everyone else includes them turning back into divine spirits as well (and reincarnating into Mer in the meantime). It's all or nothing - either everyone transcends or nobody does.

Except there's no guarantee that what their doing will actually change anything. At least they could do is go the path of the Dwenmer and find away to make themselves revert back and let everyone else who doesn't wanna be, be.

Thanks, I was thinking it might be something like that since I didn't find anything in game.

Interesting they decided to go this route with the thalmor as this belief structure rarely lasts in the real world.... wonder if it getting toppled from the inside out will be in a later installment.
