Reference for anybody who might not remember what he is talking about:

On to the question though, I actually wondered the same thing when I first played through Zeta and came up with a few different possibilities:

1. Its some sort of strange meteorological anomaly caused by adverse conditions in the Fallout Earth's atmosphere (also SCIENCE!).

2. Its an area that was hit with an enormous concentration of nuclear weapons when the war occurred.

3. Some sort of distortion or illusion of some kind.

4. Other than that, perhaps some strange terra-forming experiment by post-war scientists (or pre-war) that went horribly wrong.

I'd honestly like to hear some thoughts on this as well. Seems like an interesting topic to discuss.

I have never noticed this and exploring such an anomaly in cannon would be awesome...

I'll have to look close (if I ever get MZ to load without crashing the game); any chance its the http://www.falloutwiki.com/Glow?

the Glow, true to its name, is one of the most highly irradiated locations in the Fallout universe. A few moments' exposure is enough to give the player a lethal dose of rads. Use of Rad-X to boost Radiation Resistance to 100% is widely considered absolutely necessary to survive a trip to the Glow.

(I posted some screen shots in my first post above which show the spot he's looking at. Not sure if that's what you are looking for or something else.)

But actually that was one of my first thoughts when I played MZ. Fallout 3 was my first Fallout game, so at one point when I was on the Vault looking to get myself acquainted with Fallout lore, I saw the phrase "The Glow" and immediately thought of that spot in MZ.

I think its too big to be the glow though. It's really of quite enormous size and brightness. I don't think West Tek was that irradiated (assuming it is radiation).

Wasn't there someone who figured out where the "death ray" hits (somewhere in Canada I think). Perhaps we can use that as a comparison to figure out whereabouts this thing is.
