Chillrend vs Goldbrand vs Umbra

Post » Sat Sep 26, 2009 8:46 am

Alright, I'm going to say that I did not figure this out on my own. This was a post from a user on the PlayStation forums.

Chillrend: 25 dmg, 20 frost dmg, weakness to frost 35% for 20 sec.
Goldbrand: 30 dmg, 22 fire dmg.
Umbra: 33 dmg.
.
Now assuming for easy math, each swing from the swords does its base dmg..
Chillrend doing 25 melee dmg per swing..
Goldbrand doing 30 melee dmg per swing..
Umbra doing 33 melee dmg per swing..
.
Im basing this out of 80 swings because thats how many charges Chillrend has. (Goldbrand only has 76).
Chillrend: 25*80 = 2000.
Goldbrand: 30*80 = 2400.
Umbra: 33*80 = 2640.
.
Now when looking at the enchantments, Goldbrand looks like it has more dmg, but with that 35% weakness, Chillrend now has an extra 7 points of frost damage per swing, except for the initial swing..
Chillrend: 27*79 = 2133 + 20 = 2153.
Goldbrand: 22*76 = 1672.
Umbra: I'm a stupid sword and dont have a damage enchantment.
.
So total damage from the swords being:.
Chillrend: 4153.
Goldbrand: 4072.
Umbra: 2640.
The difference very little indeed only being 81 dmg, but Chillrend swings at a faster rate..
.
Chillrend: 1.2.
Goldbrand: 1.0.
Umbra: 1.0.
Speed (1.00 is equivalent to 2 swings per second).
.
Speed is another factor because Chillrend can swing 144 times per minute while Umbra and Goldbrand can only swing 120 times per minute. So Chillrend can unload 80 swings in 33 seconds while Goldbrand and Umbra take 40 seconds.
.
Another factor is weight. The heavier the sword, the more fatigue it drains per swing..
Chillrend weighing in at a mere 22 pounds..
Goldbrand weighs 52 pounds..
Umbra, even while weighing 0, still seams to drain fatigue as if it had its 45 pound weight while not a quest item..
I swang each blade 20 times to test this theory and I was correct. Chillrend took the least fatigue, then Umbra, then Goldbrand who took a little more than Umbra..
.
But some people prefer one over the other because of looks and/or blade length since the differences are not very large. (Atleast between Chillrend and Goldbrand that is)..

So there you have it. Chillrend is the best weapon in the game when it comes to total damage. Hope this clears up any confusion.

There is not a definitive 'best weapon'. My weapon choice boils down to simple role-playing. B)

Here are some facts not mentioned in your post.

Chillrend: There are leveled varieties of this weapon (as opposed to Umbra and Goldbrand). The low end reward is no where near the specs of the higher end. It also has a lower reach than the other two. Health can vary from 615 to 175... A huge difference (Umbra = 700, Goldbrand = 900), and with more strikes comes quicker health degradation which in turn effects the total (damage inflicted is reduced proportional to it's health).

I find elemental damage to be a hindrance personally (many enemies have resistance and/or reflect). Umbra does have soultrap which can be useful for recharging other enchanted items or itself for that matter.

Having said that, I have found my favorite weapon is a Daedric Longsword enchanted with absorb magicka for my Atronach Battlemage.

I suppose long-post-short is that for myself it doesn't always boil down to numbers, only what fits my current character.

It's more that a good number of enemies tend to be resistant to frost. As Rhomphaia points out undead are resistant to frost. I guess that's because they hang around in cold tombs and are use to cold. Also animals (perhaps being outdoors on cold nights) are resistant to frost.

A standard daeric longsword does 21 in base damage; yes it’s a little less than the artefacts.
A perfect amber or madness sword does 25 in base damage.
All can be enchanted with a shock sigil stone doing 25 in shock damage, daedra is weak against it only the stone elemental resists.
Better a absorb health 25 sigil stone who not only does 25 in magic damage but also heals you 25 hp.

With grand soul gems you can make far more powerful weapons. Drain health 100+shock damage 10 for one second, weakness to shock 100 for 3 sec+ weakness to magic 100 for 3 sec, or similar is seriously overpowered as it will double the magic damage each hit and kill the enemy once he is below 200 in health, downside it that it can keep few charges so it’s smart to add soultrap for 1 second first.

Of the three weapons I find umbra most interesting as it does serious stealth attack damage, does not weight anything and you can get it at lower levels than the other weapons.
The soul trap effect is nice if you don’t have a good soul trap spell

Remember, though, as I said in the original post -- Chillrend is better when it comes to total damage and DPS, assuming you're fighting an enemy with no resistances.

OBJECTION!

While chillrend may do the most damage overall and swings faster, it isn't very efficient against ghosts, wraiths and other ethreal beings.
You know, the things you kind of need an enchanted weapon to fight?
My opinion at least.

I would never use any pre-enchanted weapon in the game. In all cases, I much prefer self-enchanted.

When I use a blade, I kinda prefer the bound claymore. Damage 29, weight zero, speed 0.8, range 1.3. Oh and enchanted with 25 or more shock damage (plus the ever so handy brief soul trap effect).

I really like being able to dance around with the long range of that claymore smiting foes and almost never getting hit because of the the longer range.

'Course my characters generally prefer bows. Even there, I much prefer a self-enchanted bow over even the level 19+ Hatreds Soul. Why send a blade where an arrow can go? :P

None of those. I sold Chillrend; did not bother of becoming Boethiah's entertainment, and I gave Umbra to Clavicus. I prefer enchanting my own weapon or use Debaser because it purdy.

To me it′s more important what I think of a weapon rather than just see to the numbers.
And I prefer Chillrend when choosing one of these :)
