Cave Bear > Arch-Mage

Post » Tue Dec 06, 2011 1:31 pm

Hi,

I mentioned this on another thread but I hope that if this issue with Destruction Magic is sorted I can enjoy my mage. The best line I have heard from a forum member regarding this level-scaling nonsense (WHICH I HATE) is;

"why bother getting stronger?"

This line is perfect, simple, elegant and straight to the point.

So I have 75 in Destruction Magic and Arch-Mage so I am now a big shot apparently...

However I was wandering through the forest.... as Arch-Mages do... and came across I proceeded to use Wall of Flames on the floor which only did about 5% damage to a Cave Bear and then use FIVE dual-cast Firebolts with 50% extra damage perks. Needless to say this is a joke and I should be owning Cave Bears by now.

I don't care about all the excuses but fundamentally why do I both leveling if everything level up the same... I am 30 hours in on my 2nd characters and I feel as though I have made NO PROGRESSION because everything has adjusted to my level. Even the spells and loot in dungeons are almost all dependent on my level. It makes no sense at all. It lacks realism, removes challenge and makes your efforts meaningless.

They surely could have come up with a better idea than level-scaling... perhaps lots of areas for your level and different areas for higher levels. There are so many locations in this game we would still have freedom of choice to some extent. Now we have unrealistic freedom of choice! This makes no sense. No-one in the games enviroment would be able to travel to where the please and overcome the challenges wherein on a whim... you have to be strong enough to face particular challenges. I can now practically go anywhere I like and its all within my capabilites.

THERE IS NO POINT BEING STRONGER.

I felt more strong as a level 10 than I do now as a level 21.

the main problem there is the fact that destruction does almost no extra damage as you level up and gain skill, and is comparably terrible to melee in damage output

But seriously, I think as soon as Construction Set is out there will be Skyrim versions of LAME and Mighty Magic and all those other tasty magic mods from back in the day. I hope the guys who did Oblivion/Fallout Script Extender are still in business too. The possibilities could be endless.

I personally parked my "mage" main until the CS drops, and am playing the sword-n-bow alt. Not a solution, but diminishes overall aggravation.

My arch mage has zero problems with cave bears, or dragons, or any other such critter...

True story. Maybe it's the way you play your mage.

Eh I still bump into ordinary wolves and other things I can now one shot so it works for me. If nothing scaled the game world would get kind of boring or there would just be places you could not go since they were leveled past you. Fine for dungeons but not the open world IMO.

Why not choose to be more versatile with the skills? It's true that destruction magic isn't particularly effective on all enemies (but it's devastating on many). I don't see that as a problem myself. I found that those giant earwig looking things were so armor plated that my arrows bounced off them (literally) and did zero damage. I wouldn't say that this makes archery underpowered, instead I would say the enemies in the game are varied and thus varying the tool one uses to dispatch them makes sense.

Ok I understand the frustration with destruction magic. Yes it's an issue Bethesda needs to fix but do we really need a million topics talking about the same thing.

try cc'ing something or using a summon and getting a fireball off at the enemies back, seems to do a lot more dmg, ive one shotted powerfull enemies by getting a shot off at their back, also if ur mana can take it, use fireball instead of firebolt.

If someone problem is that unloading a whole lot of Destructive magic spells as a target doesn't drop it's life much, I don't see how spending time and more magicka on spells that deal no damage at all would help.

The problem is not that you are weak. Or that destruction magic is weak.

The problem is that the game made you the archmage too early. You did 8 quests and now you are the most important mage on skyrim...just does not make sense.

Skill requirements for guilds quests should come back.

I got 1-shotted by some Charaus exoskeleton thingy in CC...

a) cry about it?

B) come back and snipe it to death CAREFULLY...because I'm a sneaky dude with crap CC?

--------------

Loving the game.

------------

Cave Bears, fwiw, were top-predators whilst around, huge, (seriously HOOGE! Dude!) mean very scary bear.
Cave Bear v Dragon would be a good pit-fight.

IMO, Destruction magic is very Over-Powered. I've upped my magic nearly every level, and i can cast Fireball/Chainlightening all day long. I kill Dragons in a few minutes, Trolls even quicker. You really shouldn't be having a problem...

I realize that when I hit 75 destruction and went on to finish main quest before I continuing to gimp myself.

stop spamming a single school or spell. variety is essential for a mage.
