Dunmer speaking "old velothi" in TR?

Post » Wed Dec 07, 2011 6:55 am

Is there any fact to this language or did the creator just make it up?

http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Tes3Mod:Tamriel_Rebuilt/Lost_in_Translation

it is supposedly "old velothi"

"Os alnef dahrdig as ald hudilk; el edur luvahr lo dahrdid ot vilshif hudilk. Os bahr ar dahrdig devahr ohn, er os ur'ish ohuhm julifkhes."

Breton, according to two internet translators. But I doubt it.

Oh. No in-game languages exist, barring a few words of Ehlnofex pseudo-Latin and now Dragon language.

There's nothing official actually languages as we know except already mentioned Ehlnofex and now Dragon.

But there's languages in the Lore but we dont have any actual sources or information on how they are written or spoken.

Its based on the canonical dunmer language, but greatly expanded.

Barring Quenya-ripoffs and the Keyes stuff I forgot about, none of those languages have much the way of actual phrases and grammar, do they? I didn't mean that all Tamriel speaks two languages, of course.

I've never seen anything as complex as the babble in the OP.

Ayleid is pretty damn compete, as is Yoku (much of which I've yet to add to the dictionary - oops). Ta'agra is too complex to decipher grammar out of, but we have a fairly comprehensive sample and know some of the rules from the developer who designed it. Between Ehlnofex, Aldmeri, Dunmeri, and Kothri, we have a good grasp of the form and function of Aldmeri-derived languages. Thats hardly "no in-game languages exist."

I've never seen anything as complex as the babble in the OP.

Thats cause a bunch of TR people sat down and wrote a huge dictionary and grammar guide back in the day. I'm quite frankly surprised that quest is still in the mod, since we've since decided that the language is not very good or accurate.

Abagaianye Ehlnadaya. Sunnabe Ayleidoon. Oiobala Sila! El Umaril Racuvar Pellani. Sepredia Sila.

Okay so Ayleid isn't really all that complete. Can't really form complex thoughts or sentence structures with what we know of it. Missing too many transitive words and such. It's like simplified English or something. I would imagine the original Chimeri language as well as the Dwemeri one are derived from a similar language with similar words to the ones above. After all, language usually evolves quite slowly and the rapid expansion of the Aldmer from Summerset throughout the continent of Tamriel didn't take all that many generations. The same basic words and syllables should be present in many regional dialects.

It's also abundantly clear that much of Tamriel's elvish tongues are based at least somewhat on http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WN256Adtrlc&feature=related.

Knew it was something I had forgotten.

Hope you weren't offended Lady N, since you had spent a good while on a dictionary.

Ayleid is most closely based on Quenya. Ehlnofex, Dunmeri, and Dwemer? Not really.

We don't have any totally complete, speakable languages because we have no need for them. Tolkien was a linguist first and a writer second, and even his languages barely meet your standard. We do have a good idea of how several languages sound and work, and small samples from several others.

It makes sense, though, from an in-Universe perspective that all the Tamrielic Elven tongues derive from Ehlnofex. Meaning that at the very least tongues like Ayleid and Velothi should be sibling languages derived from a common root. In several of the Lessons of Vivec and at his trial, Vehk spoke phrases in a tongue that's clearly not basic Tamrielic, and had phonetic similarities to the Ayleid language.
