Why wasn't Battlespire released for free?

Post » Wed Dec 07, 2011 11:03 am

It's been over 10 years (14 to be precise) and Battlespire hasn't been released for free? That's sad. I really want to play it.

Anyone know if Bethesda is at least considering a release?

Maybe it's for the 20th TES anniversary?

HA! Only problem with that theory is that it isn't part of the series, it's an additional game (notice no Elder Scrolls: Roman Numerals).

It was an Elder Scrolls Legend game, which I guess was supposed to be an off-shoot series of more linear games focusing on lengendary stories in the ES world, but they never made anymore. Same with Redguard (Elder Scrolls Adventure).

I still intend to buy both Battlespire and Redguard from ebay. The only problem will be getting them to run on my computer.

To play Redguard you need to use dgVoodoo. Battlespire can be run within Dosbox.

Since I doubt they would make Morrowind free, I would guess Redguard and Battlespire will be made free for the 20th anniversary. If you don't want to wait that long, ebay and such are there, though since the developers and publisher get no money from that anyway... well, I'll stop there.

Arena was made free for its 10 anniversay (94-2004)

Daggerfall was made free for the 15th anniversary of the Elder Scrolls (94-2009, Daggerfall was released in 96)

Maybe in 2014, they'll release Morrowind (which will be 12 years old by then) or the two spinoffs for free.

Perhaps if they do release the spinoffs for free, I'll be able to have them as a graduation gift from Bethesda! lol Can't wait until '14, since I'll be graduating and going off to college. After that, I'll be able to leave this sham of a country (The United States) and move on to my life in England working at Jagex Games Studio. :P

Arena wasn't released for free only because it was 10 years old. It just happened to the first game at the 10th TES series anniversary. Daggerfall was 13 years old at the 15th TES series anniversary when it was released for free.

Maybe it's for the 20th TES anniversary?

Indeed, that's quite likely. If they release a game for free in 2014 at the 20th TES anniversary, it will be Battlespire for sure. And then possibly Redguard in 2019 at the 25th TES anniversary..

Morrowind won't be free anytime soon as it's selling rather well on Steam and still run as intended on modern OSes so no DOSBox tinkering is required. It would be really stupid of Bethesda to give away something for free when they still make money out of it.

HA! Only problem with that theory is that it isn't part of the series, it's an additional game (notice no Elder Scrolls: Roman Numerals).

I don't see why you consider that as a problem?

Since we're all speculating out our wing-wangs I'd say it's because BATTLESPIRE has clunky controls, ugly textures, boring architecture, an undercooked dialogue system and manages to play worse than DAGGERFALL unpatched. You've not seen how bad animations can look in a Beth game until you're seen the BATTLESPIRE Scamps. I've also never heard of anyone passing level 4 without exploits or cheats.

The game opens on a button pushing quest littered with Deadra Lords (!) and it only goes downhill from there.

Redguard looks pretty sweet. Beside the awesomeness that is Hammerfell, I love the whole pirate, sword and cape theme. It would be really nice if they tinkered a bit with the source code and release a dos-box compatible version.

But my real dream? The day we get Morrowind's source code. Oh, what? A man can dream.
