Final Roleplay Attempt

Post » Wed Dec 07, 2011 8:39 am

Hey guys,

Keeping it short and sweet. Last try on Oblivion, however this one will be pure Roleplay (Never successfully been able to 100% roleplay a character) so they'll be no Fast Travel and my character will keep within his personality (no murdering guards if he's a goody-two-shoes). So here's my questions:

1) So is there any tips I can be given to get to know my character?
2) How did your own characters begin personality wise, pre-set or through experience?
3) Anything I should know so i don't stray from the roleplaying path?
4) Anything else i've missed?

If you have any other info that can help me roleplay, then please share :).

Oh by the way, i've looked on the UESP website for roleplay, and have ideas from that but it was poorly written and the ideas weren't very good so wanting them from experienced roleplayers! Thanks guys!

1) 'Listen' to your character. I know this sounds stupid, but let them do what they want. Do they really want to do the fighters guild or do you just want to do that questline. Get a feel for who they are. My characters even 'told' me their names.

2) For my two mains, I had a basic idea about their main skills and what I'd like to happen with them, but left the rest up to them. For example, my main male character I named Arumel. Then he 'told me' he'd prefer Arum as it suited him better, so I started referring to him as Arum. We joined the dark brotherhood, then he began to have second thoughts. He found the Nine and decided to undertake a pilgramage. This was all him. I no longer felt like I was in control. This is when you get true immersion in the game.

3) Don't try and force it too much, and if this is your first roleplay don't set yourself loads of hardcoe rules. Go with the flow. It doesn't matter if you forget to sleep one night. Just enjoy it.

4) I think you've got it covered. Let your character take control.

Good luck! Let us know how it goes! :foodndrink:

I'm writing an in-character journal as I play.

The tips above to ‘listen’ to your character and to consider letting them maintain a journal are excellent and effective tips.

My contribution? Don’t go all freaky about silly rules regarding eating and drinking and sleeping and fast traveling etc. If your character really clicks, they will tell you when they are hungry, thirsty or need to rest. It should come very naturally. If you have to force those aspects, it won’t be any fun at all. On fast travel, don’t be all afraid of it. If you want to get on a ship in Anvil and pretend you had a water voyage to Bravil, there you go. There are some other creative uses for it as well. The point about fast travel is that your character should generally enjoy their travels, take their time and enjoy the discoveries along the way.

As far as mods go, I have a nice rig and use a fair number. The absolute best mod you don't even need a PC for: Imagination. :foodndrink:

I've just recently started doing roleplay with my first dead-is-dead character... but the part i hate the most is constantly having to walk through 2 districts in the imperial city just to sell loot. I'd rather just fast travel.

When you do your RP, how do you make your money? Do you lug everything back and forth from dungeons in separate "runs"?

I'm just curious how other people RP selling dungeon loot with out getting burned out always going back and forth.

-thanks

I’m OK with leaving a lot of stuff behind in the dungeons and just not going back for it when it’s too far to be reasonable. That means it takes my characters longer to save up money, and they tend to need free housing with at least one safe storage container for awhile. Most of them don’t have big financial needs, so it works. I’ll try to sell anywhere but the IC. I dislike that trudge through all of the districts, too.

Some folks would use fast travel to haul a bunch of loot, simulating using pack mules or the like. For example, you might walk the first load back to the city with your character, dealing with whatever situations crop up along the way. Then Fast Travel back and forth for the rest. It could also work for a boring walk through the city that you don't need to experience with your character. The way I see it, Fast Travel is a tool for you to use as your imagination sees fit.

The way I see fast travel, it is like when you are watching a movie and the characters get in a car and drive off. Then the next scene starts with them getting out of the car on the other side of town. The fast travel is the part in between. We do not need to sit through 45 minutes of watching them sit in a boring car ride where nothing happens. Likewise, I do not see any reason to subject myself or my character to the same boring 45 minute walk where nothing happens. To be honest, I have better ways to spend my time.

As far as the rest of it goes, just remember that your character is not you. They are a separate person. Do what they want to, what they need to. I find the best way to learn who that other person is, is simply to play the game and let it come out naturally.

Early on, it is natural to be poor. Later, money is easy. My character has never ever raised her base strength of 30. And she doesn't make multiple runs to carry loot - ever. What she has learned to do is make money from making and selling light weight potions, or enchanting cheap rings with any enchantment to sell. This is very profitable and money is not a problem. When in dungeons, she picks up gold, arrows and maybe scrolls. Almost never will she pick up anything loot wise that weighs more than 0.1. So coming out of a dungeon is not a strain - not even on her tiny encumberance. Naturally, entering the Arcane University and getting pretty good with alchemy helps here.
