[WIP] Random Encounters FO3 Style for NV

Post » Wed Dec 07, 2011 2:47 am

I made a closer look at the random encounter system in FO3 and thought that I maybe add something similar to NV to give the Mohavee a bit more of a alive feeling. If there are already mods out there that do something similar then I am glad for some directions and I stop the development. Doesn't make sense to invent the wheel twice.

If not then fitting encounter suggestions are welcome here in this thread.

The basic system is done and works. Only one encounter at the moment a small reference to another mod of mine ;). A sleepy prospector which doesn't have much chance to get to sleep.

Well, there's the Project Nevada Encounters module as work in progress that really needs someone to finish it. If you'd be interested in working on that rather than starting your own project, feel free to PM me and I'll give you some more details.

There's DFB random encounters and there's also IWS, which has a scripting option that performs a similar function.

I didn't meant fight encounters. I know there a lot of mods out there with increased spawns, more NPCs and additional fights.

The idea is to add things like:

a group of travelers which are taking a rest around a burning barrel,
a prospector which has found some tech and is defending it,
the traveler you meat in the middle of the night in the wastes who has a little bedbug problem
a brotherhood paladin who can't move because his powerarmor is rusty and is in desperate need of a oil can

such little things which are a lot of them in FO3 (the examples are mixed from all different sources). Not complex but tiny interesting random things which makes traveling more interesting. I am pretty sure one reason why NV feels so empty is that these random encounters are missing. Fighting ones are nice but leave again death and emptiness behind.

But it seems there isn't much interest in such a mod so I am not sure if I work on it further.

i am very interested in something like this. i miss the random stuff in FO2. i was very disappointed that the wild wasteland trait only adds a few (two that i can think of now: old lady gang and tumbleweed nightkin) random, funny encounters in FONV, and like you said both only end in death.

one concern: i use the mod DFB random encounters, and if you are going to add encounters that don't HAVE to end in violence you may want to work around the new spawn locations added by mods like that since your non-violent encounters will most likely get slaughtered if they spawn near one of these locations. nothing a patch, or the proper load order, couldn't fix but figured i would throw it out there.

It simply depends how the other mod is made. The NPCs of pure roleplay encounters are mostly in a neutral faction so there should be no problems. For the other ones it's completely ok and planned if for example my legion slave caravan gets slaughtered by mod added NCRs/Creatures and the enslaved NCR recruit is freed by them. The slave is pretty good in hiding and running if set free as I could test shortly. This guy survived scorpion valley (respect). And in the legion play through he ends where he belongs... in the slave pen ;) if his guards survive.

You see I try to take care of all possibilities .

If a location that I have chosen is already overrun by critters that another mod adds, still no problem. It's a !!! random !!! encounter mod. The encounters are designed in a way that they can happen everywhere. If one ends in death then it simply does it. If the sleepy prospector decides to sleep nearby mod added Radscorpions then he made this bad decision and still it's funny to watch how the little bed bugs try to fight the scorpions after his poisoned death.

Maybe you see how the story ends in another play through at another location if it's a unique one. The repeatable ones can be seen in the same play through again because they are repeatable.

So no need to worry except your whole Wasteland is overrun by insane Deathclaws ;).

sesom -

I think your idea is brilliant (as all of your ideas are). You might try starting a thread at Nexus if you'd like some more feedback. There are a lot more players still active over there and definitely players that see themselves playing NV for a long time are over there. This forum is very slow and has been for a long time. The Nexus Forums have more activity, although they've been slowing down since September.

I certainly am.
Such a thing would spruce up the wasteland in a fun way.

I had DFB random encounters running, but at one point I just tired of random shooting. So a random encounter mod that does more than just throw hostiles at me is nice.
It would be fun if perhaps you came across some bandits, that you could either fight, gave into or persuade to let you go.

must admit that i hadn't thought this all the way through when i posted. the way you explain it a random encounter hostile encounter mod would would add a lot of extra randomness to your mod. looking forward to it even more now!

as for demand, nexus definitely has a lot more traffic then this site. i imagine traffic will drop even more with the release of skyrim. personally, i will still be playing NV well after skyrim comes out. my fiscal situation does not allow me to buy the hardware i need to run skyrim anytime soon.

About the traffic in the thread: I get that there is interest to make this thingie ;) . Now that it is clear what exactly I am making. I will start a thread on Nexus tomorrow and change the first post soon with more details. Thanks @all for the positive feedback.

I have prepared about 30 different encounters (they have variations too so it's actually more) on my own (2 are already implemented, I started with the complicated ones and was pretty fast). Not sure how many locations for them where they can happen I will implement. So if no suggestions come it's maybe enough. I can add more pretty easy if the suggestions come at a later point..

@Poison_Berrie
I love the 'unsuccessful' robber from FO3. I have a similar scene in mind (not a copy, no worry). So robbers are in. Thanks for the suggestion.

Just wait 'till Fallout 4 comes out... the Radiant Story will make setting up these random encounters even easier. :D
Spoiler

(FYI: Skyrim's Radiant Story system was created specifically because of the humongous and inflexible script system that they made in FO3 for random encounters... much like how the Radiant AI system with its conditional behavior packages came from the obtuse scripting system to make NPCs move about in Morrowind).

@MadCat221
Waiting for FO4 is a bit to long for me ;). The system from FO3 isn't inflexible but it takes a lot of experience and effort to set it up. I am pretty sure I will work on Skyrim too (more in the slaver business ;) ) but Fallout is my real love :fallout: .

if your taking suggestions: i would like to see more monty python references! i grew up on that show and always get a huge kick out of them. i think the bridge of death over a very tiny valley would be hilarious (and it would be a FO2 reference, in a sense, as well). or instead of always getting attacked by the gang of old ladies in freeside (if you have wild wasteland trait) you could make it switch between the old lady, road cone, or baby gangs

I am asking for suggestions in the initial post. I change it soon.

I add some more monthy phytons. It's important that the encounters don't depend on specific locations. So sorry ... no bridge troll or changes on the freeside ladies. But there is enough stuff in the movies and I know most of them. I don't post which ones I have in mind so I don't spoil the surprise.
Even if they are more for the comic factor I won't use the Wild Wasteland Perk as condition. I hate the music and the message which tries to tell me that I should laugh know. But I try to fit them in as best as I can so it doesn't look out of place and you still get the reference.

8 Encounters are done (2 major, 6 minors) and fully working. Only 22 to go...
