How hyped was the community for oblivion?

Post » Wed Dec 07, 2011 6:53 am

Ok this isnt really related to Skyrim, but well, it seems that many people here were present during oblivion's release :celebration: Since i only started TES 1.5months ago, im quite curious as to how excited people were for oblivion after watching the game trailer and such.

Insanely, ridiculously hyped. A lot of people wound up disappointed.

How would I prove that? I've been on here for more than six years now and I remember it quite well. People were losing their [censored] all the way up to the game's release. I certainly wasn't one of the disappointed crowd but some people were hoping for something a bit different from OB.

I was hyped for sure, but nothing like this. If they meet halfway between Morrowind and Oblivion (ok maybe more towards Morrowind) I'll be a happy puppy. If not Bethesda will have hell to pay since I just spent £1450 on a new system specifically for this game, and another Dragon Age 2: Electric Boogaloo style disapointment doesn't bear thinking about.

I'd say the hype level was even higher than for Sklyrim.

Remember, Oblivion landed shortly after the launch of a new console generation. People's imaginations were out of control with what untold potential the game had in store.

I've also wondered this. It would be cool to read some old topics from when people were waiting and speculating for Oblivion.

This is how I remember it too. Expectations for Oblivion were at least as high as they are now for Skyrim.

In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if a few of us who lived through the hype of Oblivion marketing and the disappointment with the shipped game are probably much more guarded this time around, less inclined to allow ourselves to go overboard with anticipation. We don't want to suffer that let-down again.

If you start being pessimistic about it, it can only turn out to be way better than you anticipated. Or you could play daggerfall for 10 days and be blown away by the graphics when Skyrim hits the shelves.

Me, I must be a marketer's nightmare. I simply never buy in to hype. I wasn't hyped for Oblivion. I'm certainly not hyped for Skyrim. Can't recall how I felt about Morrowind and Daggerfall before their releases.

My philosophy is, game-wise in any case, once it's released and you play it, then get hyped about it if you feel it deserves hype.

I do have Skyrim pre-ordered, but I'd have done so without the hype. I pre-ordered Oblivion too, soon as we were allowed to do so. Didn't buy it until 2009...turns out my then-computer could in no way meet minimum specs and was too old to upgrade. The wait didn't bother me in the least.

No problems with that this time 'round. Even my secondary computer can run Skyrim at high settings.

I am not qualified to answer this since I was a late bloomer with Oblivion and have only played just over a year. But, I can say that having pre-ordered Skyrim, I am extremely jeolous at this point. There are 2 users on my Xbox 360 friends list who are actively playing Skyrim. One is level 26, and has a gamer score of 370. He is a reviewer for game informer. Although we are friends, he said he could not provide me any feedback yet.

I learned this lesson back with Doom 2. I was all worked up over it coming out, and even pre-ordered a copy of it. That was the last time I ever made that particular mistake. I did not get my copy until two weeks after the game hit the shelves, and wound up paying more than I would have if I had bought it at Best Buy on the first day of its release. Then when I actually got the chance to play it: *yawn*. It was nothing more than an expansion pack for the first game pretending to be a sequel. Since then I learned not to fall for the marketing b.s. of game developers.

I cant help being really excited for this game. I was hyped even more for Oblivion, and was really disappointed with the game. I cant help but have a good level of excitement for Skyrim, though, Bethesda makes some really great games, and if it is half as good as Morrowind was (and half as good is all that I need), it will be played for a long, long time

Here's the reason why the community was so hyped for Oblivion, and so disappointed when it released:

Long story short: Todd Howard fell into the Peter Molyneux trap, he tried too hard to impress his audience before they actually finished and tested everything causing the final version of Oblivion to be inferior to what was demoed. The greatest culprits being the dynamic soft shadows and Radiant AI (gone and gutted, respectively).

A very good point, and where I stand too. I had never heard of any TES game before I got my hands on Oblivion, didn′t know what it was about or anything. I even thought it was a strategy game first! :D

That said, I had no hype while installing it. But when I started to play... :twirl: :ahhh:

And that′s how I like it: I don′t want to know anything about the game I′m about to play for the first time. I want to explore it and find out myself what it′s about. Knowing about TES games ruins everything for me now. I can never again play one for the first time because even though they′d be new like Skyrim, I′m still familiar with the franchise

It was as crazy back then as it is today, but of course it was the Daggerfall fans vs. those Morrowind come-lately "noobs" and with less traffic, but still a toxic and unfriendly place. The only forum feature that kept many people around was the newly opened CD. The release of Oblivion drove many forum members away...
