Could Skyrim really be a direct sequel to Oblivion?

Realistically Skyrim is a "direct sequel." It may not be a "true sequel," in the sense that you play the same protagonists, or the events of the previous game are left undone. However, it is a direct sequel in the sense that it is a chronological sequel and is impacted by the events of Oblivion. With each TES, there is some form of connection and chronological jump. They aren't completely separate and disjointed. There is a strategy to what Bethesda does, and each new game builds upon the last (whether through easter eggs in the game, or various other forms of references).

Well yes, all Elder Scrolls games impact on each other. It needs to in order for the lore to make any sense what-so-ever. I was under the assumption that you were thinking that it a true sequel. But yes of course it will be a chronological sequel as are all of the ES games. The empire will still not have a Septim at its throne. Morrowind will be the same as in the book(i'm expecting anyways) ect.

If the game is set 200 years after the events of Oblivion, don't you think Tamriel would've settled and become stable?

I mean, the teaser directly mentions the gates of Oblivion, and since the last Septim's sacrifice shuts the possibility to open Oblivion gates "forever", I don't think Oblivion gates would be relevant 200 years after its shutdown

I like to think it's around 3-6 years after that, long enough time for "the other force" to gather its strength after barely escape via Oblivion gates, short enough for Oblivion gates to be relevant.

I mean, dang, they're dragons. You don't gather your strength for 200 years if you're a dragon. A few weeks and lots of cows and you're good to go.

Unless somehow someone managed to bring Oblivion gates back...

Kurt Kuhlmann has confirm in the January 2011 issue of Game Informer that the Events of Shivering Isle is Cannon, but the impact of it has yet to be shown. It's on page 99 of the issue.

Canon in this context means that its part of history.
As opposed to fanon, wich is fan fiction and not part of 'official ES history'

I think it could be set in between the Oblivion Crisis, and the infernal city, maybe we get to see The Ministry of Truth collide with Vivec, and subsequently the eruption of Red Mountain, from Skyrim.
