Is it possible to see creature level?

Post » Wed Dec 07, 2011 8:33 am

Hi all,

Is it possible to see what level monster/enemy you are about to fight before (or even during) combat? I have a mod installed which prevents the baddies from levelling as I do however I now find I don't know whether its the fact that the enemies are too high for me to deal with or its just me being crap :-) (although I've got a good idea....) The mod I've got is Francescos Levelled creature mod.

Ta for any help.

It's not possible to see this stuff in-game (although there's probably a mod somewhere to "fix" this Lol). You can go to www.uesp.net and look up Oblivion > Creatures. It should have them all listed up.

I can use the command console on the PC to glean info on foes, such as what a particular attribute is, but I know of no command that shows their level. That doesn't mean there isn't one, only that I am not aware if there is.

In the vanilla game, Renee is absolutely right.

EDIT: Thanks, Savlian, for the info below!

On the PC you can open the console (tilde "~"), click on the creature or NPC, and enter the command "getlevel". You can close the console by hitting tilde again.

I'm pretty sure there is no way to get creature levels on the xbox or ps3.

Nope, there isn't. NOt that I know of anyways. The Xbox and PS3 are like electronic Dungeon Masters who jealously guard most of what's going on behind the scenes.

Hmm, thats strange 'cos someone posting on another forum about the mod has mentioned that he can tell what level the creatures are. Methinks he's making it up as you guys/gals have got the experience. Ok then let me rephrase my question. How can I tell that creatures are too powerful for me (assuming you use this or a similar mod). There must be some visual clue (riding in on a big dragon whilst waving a glowing sword whilst I'm armed with a dagger and 3 lettuces would be a big hint). Or is it just trial and error?

It is pretty much trial and error. If they are hitting you and things are looking grim, run away!

There may however be a mod out there that allows you to see the levels of enemies, head over to the mod sub-forum for more info on that.

It's been a long time since I used it so I don't remember how much or what data it reveals, but http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=29127 by kuertee will show quite a bit of information about a creature or NPC.

Another handy mod is http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=16704 by Asesino, which will display the contents of an NPC's inventory.

You can try my mod Espy creatures. It'll tell you the creature's level relative to yours after "espying" them from a short distance.
Links to my mod is in my signature.

i dont wanna sound like a chutiya, but isnt it just a question of knowing what ur level is, then checking:: if creature CAN level, then its ur exact level; if not they're as shown http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Creatures ?

I'm using a mod which randomises the creature level pdesbois, so it wont necessarily be the same. Good link though thanks.

kuertee I think that is what I'm after, thanks I'll give it a go.

Update: Couldnt get it to work kuertee. I've got the omod conversion data (folder), ini (folder), readme and .esp files all just dumped in the main data folder. Lets me tick the box in the data list at launch but no luck when pressing V (definitely standing still btw). Any ideas?

Two questions for you, Ctuhuluspawn:
  • Do you have OBSE installed? Without it, the mod won't work.
  • Do you use the Oblivion Mod Manager? It helps install the mod properly. To install it manually (i.e. without the Oblivion Mod Manager):
The esp needs to be in the Data\ folder and the ini file in the Data\Ini folder. Create the Ini folder if you don't have it. The "omod conversion data" folder is for OBMM and can be deleted.

Does this help? Let me know how you go, please.

Not really sure if this question is as aresponse to my mod, but if it is...
My mod is suppose to "immersively" describe the relative strength of a creature / npc in relation to the player's sterngth.
Any real-life combatant (in any sport) would normally have the instinctive ability to judge whether their opponent will be an easy or difficult challenge just by seeing how that opponent moves / acts. The game represents the creatures level of experience with only the creature's size and the npc's visible equipment. I don't think this is representative enough of their actual strength. And so, I created the mod.

Aha! No I don't have the OBSE installed (perhaps the other mods don't work either and I don't realise it).

Do I just need to install it like it says http://cs.elderscrolls.com/constwiki/index.php/Category:Oblivion_Script_Extender and everything will work fine or do I need to start from scratch. ie: clean copy of oblivion, then OBSE, then mods. Also if the former will I need to go from the tutorial again to see the effects take place (this was a requirement of one of the other mods IIRC) .

Thanks for taking the time to help kuertee.

Yeah. Try simply adding OBSE then running Oblivion the "special way" so that OBSE is active in the game.
I don't really remember what that "special way" is because I use OBMM to manage my mods and launch the game for me.
(I think it requires creating a Shortcut that links Oblivion to OBSE.)

If you don't think you game is working as you expect, then give the readmes of the mods you have a once-over (scan through them) just to get the gist of what you need to get them running properly.

Once you're comfortable with mods and have the general idea about mods (it is a bit of an extra step from running the non-modded Oblivion), look-up BOSS to help you sort out your mod "load order". Because some mods modify the same "reference" in Oblivion as others, a properly ordered mod is important so that the different mods work as intended.

That's kind-of the general way I suggest players new to mods to get familiarise with using mods. Get familiar with the mods, the lingo, the files by quickly trying something. Once you get the general idea of it, then start learning other things like BOSS and load-orders, generating LODs (an object's level-of-detail in the terrain), cleaning mods, Wrye Bash and BAIN, etc... There is a bit to it, but you'll find learning it in stages easier (try first, if it fails, read the read-mes, then learn others) and less frustrating than taking it all in at once.

I hope that helps. And sorry, if you know all this already. I really don't know your level of knowledge with mods. I'm just guessing.

My level of knowledge of mods?................slightly less than zero.

I'll try your suggestions and see what happens. Don't think I'll go much further than getting these ones to work but you never know. Thanks for the help once again kuertee, much appreciated.

Installing the OBSE worked a treat, and your espye mod is just what I was after, thanks kuertee.
